2021 Summer Kitchen Kith New Deadline: August 29

I don't think I do anything special, I use 2 C clamps, a small drill bit normally a 1/8 bit, or a nail, I clamp the blade down 1 inch before where the warp is and put the nail at the apex, I tighten both clamps as tight as they go. I temper at low temps (like 300), below the target temper, and only go hotter (I only go to the temp I want to temper at never over) if the warp doesn't come out. I dunk the whole contraption in water and don't unclamp until cool
That's pretty much what I did, but I had the temperature at 350°F, which is what I originally tempered the blade at.

I stopped drilling AEB-L or grinding it before heat treatment and it has helped a lot. I have a live hate thing with AEB-L. It's cheap and stainless and easy to work but the warp thing sucks as well as the fact that it doesn't hold a edge all that well. Before anyone gets worked up I mean that as compared to other options and M2 and M4 are my babies and I can't wait to try MagnaCut. AEB-L is still something to have in stock at all times for any weird project or cheap or gift knifes that make up most of what I make.

I started grinding the dimples out and the blade immediately started curving again! I will give it one last try, this time I think I'll over correct the bend a little with the carbide hammer and hope the blade ends up straight after the dimples are gone.

I may have to bow out of this one. Been doing a lot of OT at work the past few weeks and have 11 knives on order to build, plus making custom fabric laminate handle blocks for 10 of them.

First look!

Looks like my potential entry is 165 mm OAL. If anyone objects, I can withdraw it because I don't think I have enough time to finish another. Based on this pattern with a different handle (curly acacia from Ben):

I think that is a fine knife. As I noted before, the rules are not set in stone. Good job. I would be happy to get that knife and test it for you.

The rules are just to make sure that basically it's sorta fair. If you turned in a a pairing knife that was nice enough it would be fine. However it isn't fair to just do a very basic pairing knife while everyone else does a chef knife. The value is probably the most important part although it's more interesting for everyone to take a shot at the same thing. If someone wanted to get in but only had another entry if someone was ok getting it I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem to let it in. Willie71 Willie71 does a really nice job and usually takes the least valuable knife if he thinks it's helpful. The biggest reason for the Kith is to have someone give you some good feedback and a way to improve as well as a good look at how someone else builds their knife. Even a flawed knife is likely to have some value as far as lessons learned a ven if it's how not to do something. If there is anyone who would have a problem with your knife I would take it and be happy. It looks useful and is far above the shank level that sometimes happens. There is always a good chance that you are not going to get the same quality of knife as you made but that's not what it's about.

Nice job.

Got it heat treated (after a bit of faffing, first time using w2) and started finish grinding, edge is down to about 10thou so a bit more walking the grind up to take some weight out of the blade the convex in and finish. Looks like there is a pretty crazy auto hamon (happy accident) in there so ill be doing a bit more polishing than planned

I’m hoping to get some time in the shop this weekend. I broke a couple ribs about 10 days ago. Feeling pretty restless.
