2022 #77 Yankee Barlow thread

I don’t know about the rest of us here that voted for sawcut on the Spring Street, but I certainly wasn’t voting for how the bone was processed. I can see that this isn’t going anywhere and I have a hunch you’re only taking that stance to validate your philosophical statement so I’ll leave it alone.
Yes, I really secretly dislike the knives and I'm only defending my statement.

Let's look at it a different way. Why did they do sawcut slabs on Barlows to begin with? My guess is to eliminate the polishing or jigging step in the process to make the knives cheaper. After all the Barlow was a 5¢ working man's knife. If this is the case the maker would not care if there were saw marks or not, they would only care that they eliminated a step in the process.

The desire for deep groove sawcut bone on these knives is a modern collectors invention and up to each individual.

The knife is neither right or wrong it just is. If there is a problem it is within us.

Happy to add this one to my collection. The sawcut is very light. Really nice action on this one.

Nice one there good snag. Congrats! 👏👏👏

Sure they cut it with a saw, that doesn't necessarily mean that it's what your average knife enthusiast expects of a sawcut handle. it's not too hard to understand why one might be a little disappointed in the outcome. I'd be happy with any of the 4 handles, the sawcut included, but completely understand why someone expecting sawcut in the name to mean it looks like most previous sawcut examples.

Congrats on a fine looking #77 Yankee . Thanks for the fine photo of the Saw Cut . Carry it in good health my friend . I agree with you on the very light saw cut , that just indicates that it will wear smooth sooner .

Harry
Thanks Harry! The saw cut feels a bit like Charlie’s latest sepia TC Barlow, which I like a great deal. Was hoping to get my hands on one of those awesome looking stag 77s, but missed out on the reserve. If I can’t have stag, bone is my next favorite option. This one does not disappoint.
Thanks for the pics M mcc850 and Frivolity Frivolity . Looks great to me. I wouldn't mind adding either of those to my collection.
No problem! This is my first 77. Loving the size of it. I hope you are able to snag one.

Sawcut is the manner in which the bone is processed. Hyesouljah Hyesouljah you have an expectation and desire for that to look a certain way based on previous examples. It doesn't meet your expectations. It doesn't mean the bone was not sawcut, it means it doesn't meet your expectations. That is not the knife's fault, the knife merely is.

Yes, I really secretly dislike the knives and I'm only defending my statement.

Jiki Jiki , please explain me the GEC description ''Grizzly Cut Bone''

GEC won't allow anyone into the jigging room during the tour Jo.😉
🤣
Sawcut is the manner in which the bone is processed.
ok, if Sawcut in the GEC description means ''the manner in which the bone is processed'', does GEC appoint a trained Grizzly Bear in the secret jigging room, cutting the bone slabs for the ''Grizzly Cut Bone'' covers? (Pony Cut, Horse Cut,...)
;)

... and btw, in this context, whats the difference between GEC's ''Rough Sawn'' and just ''Saw Cut''?

Looks like you solved it Jo. If you want guaranteed grooves go with the rough sawn.
