Gentlemen, the shields are pinned on all the Case Bose annuals. And yes they are intentionally left proud so as to no disturb the bone and to pronounce the shield. This is customary for these knives and for custom makers alike.
Now if you want to richen that bone coloring up it's a quite simple process. Buy a small 4 oz jar of Fiebings Pro Dye leather dye. I recommend dark chocolate. With a small paintbrush apply the dye to the bone. I usually coat it a good 4 - 5 times and get a nice thick layer on there. Don't worry if you get it on any of the metal it wipes right off. I coated mine twice, I have saddle tan and chocolate brown dye but there are lots of possibilities. I might do another coat but want to carry it for a while and see what it does as is. I’m happy with it and really like the knife.
