2024 GEC 321224

I got a Hemlock in the mail from Mike today. Really wanted one for the covers because of the calf roper which looks amazing in photos. Tried to compare it with the BF 21 but light is fading. I can’t remember what the jigging is called, I think of it as peach seed and it’s one of my favorites. Quick check says everything is mostly GEC standard, double liner on this one as well, half stops on both blades, looks like maybe rub on the secondary? Spring is flush on main closed and open. Pull is a 5-6 for me could be a little stronger but that’s subjective. Blade grinds were even and both blades were sharp. I’ve got very small gaps on both ends of the liners which I wouldn’t have thought about on any other manufacturer but I don’t see it often on GEC. Overall well executed. Edit: I’ll try and include a photo tomorrow that’s in focus.

Tough to get photos of something like this, but here ya go on the extra liner/added blade well. It gives the clip blade a well to rest in, giving it an extra mm or so of space from the pen blade.

But why is it _not_ there on the ESPL model?

Just ordered a #32 in the black jigged bone. Never owned a GEC before; been wanting one. Really would like a Northwoods too; probably much more difficult to get

I’ve been wondering what other blade shapes suit the 32. The clip point is perfect for them of course. Side by side with that 35 has me thinking that a coping blade secondary would be awesome.

Awesome, thanks! I thought they'd be pretty similar, this looks really good. Love that the 32 has half stops, too. Now to decide between cocobolo and the blue paper...

I wish they had gone with a cam tang like the Churchill instead of half stops.

Frank.K Frank.K the coping secondary would be *ideal*. I know pen blades are longer standing traditionally but coping/sheepsfoot secondaries, for me at least, are perfect. I'm not stranger to regrinding blades, and will probably regrind this one... Little bit of a challenge to get it just right when the nail nick is that far forward, but it works.

Don't get me wrong, I love a good cam tang as well. Some of them are so smooth it makes the knife feel like a luxury item. The pull weights have become a higher priority for me over the years, and I've just met more half stop knives from GEC that have action and (firm) pull weights that turn me on. I'll be curious to see what the upcoming 81s are like in that regard, too. The bull moose from back in 2017 or 2018 was a great example, super smooth but just on the light side for my preference. Those spear secondary blades made for excellent sheepsfoot regrinds.

Think of it as a whittler with a coping and pen?! That would've been sweet!

traumkommode traumkommode , cool, post a pic if you decide to modify it. Maybe it could start with a little belly and then become a coping blade as you sharpen it.

CuzDoug85 CuzDoug85 , I bet it will be built as a whittler some day, it would need two springs probably.

Here's a 78 that I cope'ed. It's a very slight amount of belly and it does get straighter with a couple sharpenings. I think I'm gonna go with a cocobolo 32, it was a tough call between that and the blue but GEC's cocobolo is never a bad choice in my experience.

I'll post the #32 modification whenever the knife gets here, probably have it done in a week or so.

Very nice work on the 78.
I have the blue one and I really like it. It feels sturdy and I think the Tidi shield on it is the most proportional to the handle. I managed to score on a very low priced drop though, so I was stoked before it even arrived.

Edit: although, look at the pic of the coco posted above, that shield is really nice, I don’t know, get both? 🤷
