20cv pm2

So you're saying there isn't more than twice as much silicon in M390 as 20CV? My three minutes of internet research suggests there is.

That is the only difference. .30 vs .70 silicone. Such a tiny difference is widely regarded to be entirely negligible. Often there will he more variation of ammount of a single element in one type of steel and it will still be considered the same steel. For example 154cm can have anywhere between 0 to .4% of both tungsten and/or vanadium and will still be considered 154cm.

For all practical purposes m390, CPM 20cv and CTS-204p are considered to be the same steels. While strictly speaking they are different steels they are about as similar as 3 steels get. There are steels that are considered analogs of other steels that have more variation than these three.

Actually the biggest difference considered between the three is that m390 uses a 3rd generation powdered metalurgy process while cpm20cv and cts-204p use second generation processes. Despite all this the steels are so similar that they are considered to be interchangable. There’s no way as a human using it one would be able to discern any difference caused by their composition.

I was just about to ask what exactly more silicon would do when it comes to knife composition I assumed it helped forming of carbides. Just a quick research however and i came across this excellent chart.

For anyone wondering what benefits each ingredient has for the chemical makeup of a knife. This link shows the chemical breakup of many steels and then goes on to explain the benefits to each added compound.

Just a quick rundown, yes this our exclusive, launching Tuesday the 25th at 11am. We don't have them in hand yet, so I cannot provide any photos but we will put photos out once they arrive. 20CV is essentially an identical steel to M390 with slight differences in the recipe, but very comparable real world performance. We will be sending out email updates on the list at this link https://www.dlttrading.com/spyderco

We will also do the usual social media posts, but if you're like me its much easier to keep track of an email than a social media post.

Let me know if you guys have any questions.

M390 20cv and 204p are the same steel. Yes made a bit different but end result is the same. The only difference you will see is from the heat treat from manufacturer to manufacturer.

What sparks my interest is Spyderco’s heat treats lately. 20cv may be the same as m390 and 204p, but possibly they could be treating them to a few more HRC points. That would be excellent.

I have had Spyderco's M390, 204P, and 20CV all in the same model knife, a PM2. I sold off the M390 and 204P, but still have the 20CV with no plans to ever sell it. Take that with a grain of salt if you will. I don't specifically remember why except to say that I felt the 20CV was better.

I didn't realize there had been a CPM-20CV PM2 already. Are you sure it isn't CTS-20CP?

20cp is rare to see these days... It is equivalent to s90v which is more available. Same steel just different manufacturers.
No relation to 20cv.

20cv may be better than 20cp/s90v. But for a long time s90v has been the premium steel choice from manufacturers. Now 20cv/m390 etc are the premium choice.

What time zone is the 11 am on-sale time? Is that Central per your location? Thanks. Need to get it on my reminders...

I told myself I was going to wait for another run of the red/M390 but I can feel myself getting weak.

I also told myself that the Spyderco forum knife was coming soon, but I don't think that is going to work either!
