20cv vs Elmax

It looks bent. If you get a blade replaced 20cv has longer edge retention. But they give you a blade without a serial and I believe it will be labeled xxxx.

The value of a bent tip is not good. You will have to be honest about it when selling it. It will be hard to index in use and fine work will be difficult... Ie cutting on traced lines on paper for example.

Value after replacing would be of a normal used knife with a blade swap. Not anything bad but not map price. But better than the bent Elmax tip.

Def looks bent to me. The whole blade is straight until the tip where it's off center. Clearly bent.

So the next question you should ask yourself is, are you going to keep it, or sell it sometime in the future?
The answer to that could factor into whether or not to do a blade swap.

That's not a bend that's the grind line not being the same! I don't think any regular user could tell the difference between elmax, S3V, CPM20 or M390 for that matter.

Elmax folders thinned to about 30 inclusive are nasty little cutters btw. I'm sure that 20cv would be the exact same.

I can't tell if it is a bent tip or slightly uneven grind it appears to me to be an uneven grind ... but it really kind of falls to what you prefer ...

as far as the steel swap ... I like Elmax and from my limited knowledge with 20CV on a couple knives I like it ... my slight preference from much more experience with it would be Elmax for the bit of extra toughness ...

but I have to be honest and say my own experience ... I can't tell a difference and probably never would in a folder ...

in a folder I'd think the toughness factor wouldn't come into play at all for 90% of users ... so unless 20CV is much more difficult to sharpen than Elmax I don't think you would notice much if any difference in performance ...

but some will consider the 20CV an upgrade ... so it shouldn't affect future values of the knife unless you get a buyer wanting a factory NIB specifically with the orginal steel.

To me this is a bit of a difficult choice depending on if the blade is bent or uneven grind. If it is bent them it needs to be fixed or replaced. Personally I would inquire with some professionals about fixing it and it could also be a warped blade instead of bent. If it can't or is unreasonable or just cost prohibitive to you to have a bent or warped blade fixed then absolutely replace it. If it is just an uneven grind then I am less inclined to do anything with it as I personally love Elmax. The 20cv is possibly a better EDC steel there is something about Elmax that draws me to enjoy carrying it. I sadly only have one knife in the steel as it isn't terribly common. I know there are people who will also do a regrind on a blade for you as well if you want to keep the blade but fix the grind. The only other thing to keep in mind is if you plan to keep this knife or if you think there is a fair chance you might sell or trade it down the road. The value of the knife will be impacted by anything you do or don't do positively or negatively.

I think it is a bent blade... I really wanted to keep the elmax, but I think I’m going to get the 20cv. I already have a Griptillian in 20cv, which is why I wanted elmax more. Oh well...

That’s exactly what I was thinking, while blade straight, then curves at the tip. Thanks for the advice!

Thanks! I think I will replace the blade. Does anybody know if the 20cv is satin or stone wash? Thanks

More I looked at it I am inclined to think it is a warped blade but being far from a professional on such knowledge its just the ramblings of an idiot who has a theory :p

Does a warped or slightly bent tip make a difference in performance or is it just cosmetical? Does the warp or bend just make it not be able to endure hard use? Thanks.

A warp or bend means that the cutting edge is not straight or as straight as it should be which will effect cutting performance anytime the full length of the blade is used as well it can impact the accuracy of yours cuts when using that portion of the blade vs another. This is my understanding which is as always potentially flawed.

For the price you paid, it shouldn't be like that. Therefore I would get it fixed. My mind would not let me just "forget about it and use it anyways". Every time I picked it up I'd know its flawed.

How long ago did you get it? You could just exchange it if it's within the window. Just make sure the vendor knows its a warped blade. They might put it back on the shelf for someone but they shouldn't. But yea.

I would replace it unless you can swap and get another Elmax or if you can find someone who can fix the blade for a cost you are comfortable with assuming you would prefer the Elmax. I would not keep it as is something needs to be done.

You cannot or better yet, should not fix a warped or bent blade.
