22 ?? Comments and Suggestions

Do the letters OKCA sound familiar? The site appears to cater to some type of knife weirdos, mostly porcher oriented. They show an uninterrupted list of club knives sold from 1979 through 2022. Maybe someone in the admiralty of our fleet could ask them how they accomplish the feat.
:D

An excellent idea, but probably a bit late now I think :(
are they a closer knit group? because last year, Bill did a small bunch of group knives which resulted in the rest of us getting the left overs for a 15 SFA at the rendezvous last year. What about AAPK?
From what I understand, they had a very nice #86 GEC club knife made last year, without any of the fuss or acrimony

right, i remember them, but im not a member of either of those forums and did not try for them. I know some people in the groups were tripping over themselves to try to get all of them, even though they are not members.

I think the 'well heeled well connected high powered go getters' have had enough! And I don't blame them
Neither do I JB....I guess I was hoping a little brevity might lighten the load and get their interest....I'm probably living in a fantasy world......
Some compelling information has come out of this thread though...
If I were the “powers that be” I’d have everything settled beforehand (manufacturer, pattern, dealer) and then present the option to buy or not buy to the forum. I know it sort of ruins the fun of all the polling and democratic decision-making, but it also keeps the administration from losing its mind. Some people are going to gripe no matter what happens, but it eliminates most of the moderation needs. The biggest burden is still on the dealer—who makes no profit—to handle a big order.
I like this idea...especially the bit where the organisers are recompensed for their work...via a small tax on the price of each knife sold...
Wouldn't it be fun to give all the details of the knife, but not tell the manufacturer until after everyone has paid?
Even more fun would be not telling everyone anything until they've paid ...kind of a bit iron curtainish though.
Maybe, I’ll come out of the closet…(not that way, cheish)

Thats a bit weird and scary even for me.

but we have ...BrainPower...

What we need is the well heeled well connected high powered go getters to jump back into the engine room.....

Maybe its too late.??.....What is it about the annual BFT knife that has caused such anguish in the last 4? years?...

1.GEC availability/popularity
2.Lack of any other maker wanting to take on the order......
3 The insane amount of time spent polling ..... ok its fun....but causes conflict with numbers and adds a tremendous load to the ones who are trying to organise it.
4.Flippers .
5.Newbies without a shred of Porchiness wanting a cheap GEC ...I will make bold and say there are a few from 21 who scraped in their post count currently residing in the where are they now file...but hey if weed need the numbers ...a volunteer is worth 10 conscripted men.
6. Reliance on the same people year after year...
7.the vast outlay of funds required to get it moving. A risk.

This is something I have looked forward to for like the last 11 years......it may sound lame but I enjoy the whole process.

I'm looking for solutions. #3 and #6 especially ....why these two? Because there was way too much rotten fruit being hurled and not enough carrying the them high on our shoulders to Porchenbergs most classiest Hotel ,The Earl of Porchington..for an all night feast of fat slices of roast narwhale and jugs of PorchyPorter (fermented blended narwhale blubber)
and snifters of The Isle O' The Glen Meako single blubber Portch whiskey ( fermented and distilled from a single narwhale blubber ).

I think your list is pretty good.

What really galled me was that there was a faction who opined long and loud about who was worthy of a Forum knife. I'm not talking about the rules dictating post counts and the like, I think that kind of participation bar is reasonable, it is a Forum knife after all. There was a lot of ugliness that just didn't need to happen.

Agree. Just highlights that this is a public space whereas OKCA etc are private clubs that have memberships and rules. What was happening is that people were combining the buying of a knife with notions that there was an eligibility standard in play - two separate concepts that needed to remain separate imo.

Allow me to further prove my cluelessness.
What is 22 ?? I initially thought it was the old game of gossip
Things kind of bounced between a sensitivity session, a board meeting, jokes, tar and feathers and a couple of things I couldn’t understand.
I feel like that time in Pittsburg…wrong bar!

It would be cool if more trusted members of the Porch can lend a helping hand so that the organizers aren’t overwhelmed. For example; trusted volunteers can help with the vetting process and making sure those that wish to purchase one are indeed eligible under set conditions. But I agree with others in that overall last year’s process was more positive than not. I really enjoyed it and I’d love to take part again this year and help out where I can.

If we’re steadfast on keeping traditions alive there are solutions to past problems.

This may finally be the year…

I think you're on to something here..... Several different sizes and styles to choose from..... Stainless or carbon? Wood type? We could collectively commission one our members to make a BF 22 stamp, then whoever handles the ordering could open each knife, heat the stamp with a torch and burn the handle..... We would collectively pay that member for their services.

I bet it would still be under $100!

I do not care if we do one from GEC, but I would hate to see the tradition die. I do believe the process would benefit from fewer cooks in the kitchen and a head chef to take charge of the menu. Last year I would have been more than happy to just let Charlie spec the knife, and forgo all of the polls (fun as they were).

You might be able to get Opinel to do the logo for you:
https://www.opinel-usa.com/pages/corporate

Of course then you would have to agree on a design and a model, and somebody would have to pay up front…

reflecting on all this, I think the missing part is the fun factor

GEC used to be fun and a not-for-profit pastime
Buying GECs used to be fun
Discussing the forum knife is fun (not always)
meako meako knows this and he ‘gets it’

My read is that Bill also likes having fun (I don’t know him personally like others here).

We just need to lighten the mood (that goes for me and all of us) and not get crazy serious and snarly about it all. Then it may happen.

I dont mind paying up front off the plan so to speak...Im also a fan of the private club dynamic.....not without its problems as BF is a business with the associated legality of trademarks etc etc ad infinitum ( do I sound like Gene Wilder in that Willy Wonka legal scene yet?)
I hate to be seditious but who "owns" The Porch?...not the website but the intellectual property that all of us contribute...and we help keep it alive with membership fees.
Lots of food for thought
Essentially 2 major factors have sprouted from this discussion...
1.The concept began as a small run of knives organised by a small tighknit community..its popularity and member numbers seem to have outgrown that method of organisation ...owing to factors mentioned above.
2. There is much support for the tradition to continue.

I'm ever hopeful.

Maybe Ill get 2022 lasered on to the blade I just took delivery of off the postie...from The Ukraine....yeah thats a bit raw even for me.

All good Jim...its to do with the annual bf tradforum knife....and its seemingly sad demise in 2022....those reasons outlined above.
Please be welcome to comment....however strange😆👍if you havent done so ..search the past trad forum knives...
Advancement happens at edge not the centre.
Welcome aboard.

I saw the title and got hopeful about a run of 22s! I don’t have any ship or pirate jokes to contribute unfortunately…

Meako, how many knives do we need to cover the folks on the porch?
