2nd Annual Knife Hunter Big Buck Contest! Winner is Izhmash!

HK- Cool story. Took my daughter out three times and she never saw a thing. She would rather hunt upland now.

Well I feel like I have a bit of a flu bug but I'm intending on heading out tomorrow for Ohio's opening day of gun season. Ironically we can't use what most people think of deer cartridges here but this year we are allowed straight walled rifle cartridges. Heading out with a used but new to me Marlin 45-70 and a Busse Custom I had made several years ago. I have reached a point in my life when I really don't want a knife if I don't see myself using it. The sheath I made for it is not perfect, but the Ram's Horn SCABS that Beef made for me sure is!! Hope it will bring me luck.

Yesterday morning I got my first buck, with a new rifle and used my first Busse to dress it out

A shot of my tigerhide hg55 after the field dress

A bit of the dirty work

Then down to the creek to wash up

Not as big as some here but beautiful animal none the less (would have been even better had he not broke the main beam off his left side) and very special to me being it was my first buck, taken with a rifle my fiance bought me as a gift and I used my first Busse to do the work after with. I was also very impressed that after busting through the ssternum there was not a single chip or roll on the edge of my Busse

messer454, Good luck out there tomorrow. Hope that 45-70 and SCABS get put to good use! Beautiful knife

ETA: Nice job Nemesis! First buck and with a lever gun, too cool. Snuck that in while I was posting, ha! :)

Congrats on the First of hopefully many Bucks!!!!

Heart I like heart....Pickled especially something to snack on when playing cribbage....:D

I saw an episode of The Meat Eater with Steve Rinella where he did a heart recipe so I kept it but I still haven't gotten my nerve up to try it

You need to try that heart...Good Eats!!!!!

It is a 45-70, using 405 rem. Express jacketed soft points until I can scare up some 375 grain Winchester dual bond hollow points. I have had the rifle less than a month though so I sighted it in with what ammo I could find easily for this season
A more close up shot of the rifle for you Messer

Congrats on the first buck. You never forget the first.

Venison heart is very good eats indeed. We used to make heart chili at deer camp all the time. Just cube and throw in the pot. Also good simply sauteed in butter. Also had battered and deep fried heart which was amazing.

Good sliced, rolled in flour, and fried in the skillet, too. With a little salt and pepper of course :)

Jerry,

That Rams Horn SCABS is beautiful, it is my favorite handle material at this point. I would really like to send in a Boss Jack to get a rehandle job with some of that awesomeness…… :)

Man, it looks like all the stars aligned at just the right moment for you!

That is an awesome story. A memory of a lifetime, and the story and tools to pass down with it.:)

Congratulations!

I hunted for years before getting my first buck. They just always seemed to elude me.

I can still to this day after over a decade recall the entire event. I have shot a bunch since then that I couldn't tell you anything about. But that first one, I could still point out the exact spot on the ridge were he came out, follow his trail down the hill, and show you exactly where he took his last step.

Just nothing like the first buck.
