300 SN Flipper

I just got the blue black 300-1 today! I chose it over ZT's and a slew of BM's greatest hits! Luckily my local dealer has two dozen different BM models in the display case plus ZT's so I spent a loooong time choosing a knife. Was going to get a full size Barrage with the nice aluminum bolster then was going to get a ZT 301, then was going to get a 940 then I noticed the blue black 300-1 at the end of the display case. The second I picked it up and held it then flipped it open I knew the 300-1 was the one! It fits my grip like a glove and flipping it open is a blast! Been playing with it for several hours now. There is ZERO blade play and the blade is pefectly centered! I actually like how heavy this thing is, love the blade shape! Best knife buy Ive made in months (last great knife buy being my first 710).

Agreed. I like mine for all the same reasons. I sorta wish it had a lanyard hole, but that is trivial in the grand scheme of things. It is one of my favorite flippers and heavy duty enough for tough tasks.

Well, the complaints I have heard are:
to fat
to wide
to heavy
it's a tweener, not really a small knife and not really a big knife
it's ugly
the mechanics of the axis lock don't make for a good flipper

Personally I think it is a good looking knife. I really don't care if it is a flipper or not. It is kind of an overbuilt small knife. I love the ergonomics, the feel and the look of the knife.

Well said and agree with your findings completely.

All of that's true; I was glad to try one of the first 300SN models during an early passaround, but came to the same conclusion listed above. Sent it to the next person on the roster without any regrets. Nice try Benchmade, but either use the Axis OR flipper, just not both. Put another 1/2" on the blade and it would make many happy with that change alone.

Waiting on a 300sn from a retailer that keeps telling me they have knives in stock and then makes me wait until they get a new shipment in before sending mine. They may very well have some of the lowest prices on the net but damn, I would pay more to not have to wait two weeks. This is the third time this has happened, so does anyone have a reliable retailer with reasonable prices they could point me towards?

I agree with this. I'm the guy that started this thread. I bought one this past summer, had it for a week, and traded it off. It just wasn't for me. Bigger would have been much better in the hands.

I just got my second of the 300 family. The 300S-1. That's right. I like combo blades.

I really like the new scales. The thinness and texture are refreshing.

I've been carrying the 300SSN for a while now. I like the flipper with gloves on.

I really wish I'd made an unboxing video for the 300S-1. No one would believe how easy it flips
I really don't understand people who say the Axis lock on a flipper doesn't work. It's the perfect combination.

I really like the 300. I have the -1301 and gave the original as a Christmas present. It is a solid, well-built knife. Both knives easily had the best fit and finish, centering, and lack of play out of the box of any Benchmade I've owned.

That being said, I think the primary reason folks say the Axis and flipper aren't a natural combo is that firstly, many people use the Axis to both open and close the knife so the flipper is overkill as a means of quick deployment. Secondly, a good flipper generally has a strong detent that prevents the blade from moving until enough force is applied to cause the blade to fly completely open. The 300 requires very little pressure on the flipper to start the opening process but a great deal to open it completely. I don't care though...I love mine and it will be with me for a long time.

I've had mine (300-1) for just about a week now, I love it. It's design is very aesthetically pleasing without looking gimmicky. The blue and black G10 looks absolutely cool and itfeels very comfortable in the hand. Its my first pocket knife and I hope to carry it around for many years to come. This is a "Quality" knife. there is not one single component on it that you could label as cheap or flimsy.

If I had to change or add something it would be a detent so that the blade snaps open, and some nice standoffs.

I have a love hate relationship with mine, smooth moving, great grip but tooooo dam fat! I've had to stop carrying it for a while because every time I go for my truck keys the handles have been grating my knuckles! I'm going to try to smooth and thin out the scales at some point.

When I designed this knife I wanted a knife that was very robust feeling, that was just as good at being a tactical knife or in the woods skinning out a deer. The original version is somewhat blocky but offers a very good grip. The new black and blue version has a more refined grip and sleeker look to it. I like both versions but then again I may be a little opinionated about it.:D

Are the blue/black scales on the 300-1 interchangeable with the 300SN?

Anybody know the dimension of the standoffs and size/thread of the screws? I want to buy some aftermarket standoff's to mod mine a little.

Just received mine in the mail and so far I really like it. Can't seem to be able to put the thing down. :)

I just got one for Xmas. Excellent knife! Solid, fluid opening. According to the catalog it's not any wider than a Griptilian. I'm just not an Axis lock guy. I'm old School Benchmade. Strykers, AFCK, 42, etc. The 300SN would be a keeper if it had a liner lock. Yeah I know I don't fit in with the Benchmade crowd today. :D Going to trade/sell mine.

Finished modding mine today. (I also posted these pics in another thread)

They did not come out perfect enough to keep on the knife for EDC. and I nicked the black coating on the scales so I buffed it all off of the liners, screws, standoffs, pivot and clips. I like the new look

Really like the look of the blue/black scales with stainless hardware. Just as a note I almost lost the pivot screw out of mine, only 1-2 threads left hanging on. Some clear fingernail polish fixed it but it was a close call.

I'm a Kershaw/ZT flipper guy but i've been wanting to try Benchmade for years. About 4 weeks ago i traded for a 300 on the trade forum. At first it felt a little chunky (my edc is usually a Kershaw Zing or a Spyderco Tenacious) but it grew on me. I did immediately like the flipper, very smooth! Normally i'm not a thumbstub kinda guy but it opens super smooth with that as well. I can also quite easily thumb flick it open with the thumbstud which is new for me. I've been edc-ing it since i got it, i really really like this knife. Might pick up the blue-black version down the road as well. Pretty sure i'm going to get the new 531 G-10 Pardue Drop point as well.
