.38 Special!!

Here is the new pruner with the whittler. If I carry them together, I have five different blade shapes. Pretty sweet!

The linen micarta is very fine-grained. Without good light and a little magnification, it looks kind of like wood or Bakelite.

Good job on these, guys. Now, I really intend to not buy another until the forum knife. Really.

Rachel, that is a very versatile duo you have there today. So far I have been able to resist the 38's, but not so much luck with the 73's :D

Good luck with those intentions, we all know how that can work out :eek::D

This has been duly noted down, but not written in stone.... :D:D Forum Knife has not even been decided yet.....It's a long bleak haul suurounded by temptations:eek::cool:

Well done on the new 38, looks very well in that fine maroon coat. I hope you enjoy using it, the 38 frame gives great potential for a two blade single-spring Giant Pen. KSF offered some interesting Northwoods with a Wharncliffe master but I didn't really fancy any of the scale options. So, there's room for GEC to do their own version, HOW TEMPTING IS THAT??? Yes.:thumbup::thumbup:

Thanks, Will

Very, very cool.

Could you (or Mr. Erodes WillPower, or someone else with both) please post a top-down picture of a #38 whittler next to a #38 pruner, to show their comparative thicknesses? Any description of the whittler's relative heft is also welcome.

Thanks!

Gladly. I'm sure someone could take better pictures, but for now here's a few quick and dirty cell shots. (literally dirty. I didn't notice all that dust on it when I took the picture :o

I don't know if they're exactly the same weight, but they are pretty darn close. In fact, carrying them both today, more than once I've picked up the wrong one.

Thanks much! That was exactly what I hoped to see, and feared to hear.

Every time I think I'm done....

I just broke down and ordered a 38 in rosewood... I looked at it one too many times!!

Sarah, the whittler has always seemed thinner to me, even though it's actually wider. The reason is that the bolster on the large end is thinner than the jack's.

The smaller end (knives switched positions.)

The whittler is also a little lighter, at 2.38 oz. vs. 2.40 oz. (67.4 grams vs. 68 grams), but too close to tell.

I had a weigh-in just now down on the farm and my results are very slightly different from Bob's:

Orchard Gem Cranberry Bone 69g. Tidioute Whittler Green Bone also 69g dead heat! Interestingly, the Rosewood Northfield Whittler comes in at 64g. now that's not much less but lighter nevertheless.

Lighter is what I predict Sarah's cash-stash will become... these Whittlers are svelte and un-bloated. Best three blade knife available at the moment, that is if they don't all run out.....:eek:

Well now, I said until I buy the forum knife. Not until it's delivered! :D

Nice ones Rachel! ^^^Wanna start a pact on that?^^^ I'll join you. If we start going stir crazy we can just do some horsetrading.
Sounds good.

I think the "horse trading" idea could be our 12 step program, i.e. do for us what the 12 step does for addicts that smoke/drink/ eat, etc. their substance of choice. "Our" and "us" refers to those of us who are compulsive buyers. I am included in this. How else could one person have a collection approaching or even crossing the 5 digit mark ?

Glad to have you aboard Joe! But which 5 digits are you referring to? The ones on your right hand or your left hand? Be careful!

I was actually thinking about a "system" similar to Lemmy's "horse trading" idea last weekend. A group of let's say 12 "trading partners" forms; each of them selects let's say 6 of their knives for a round of "trading" (really more like a pass-around). Each month you send the 6 knives you currently have to the next person on the list. Every month, everybody has 6 new-to-them knives to enjoy, and at the end of a year, everyone has their original knives back. Then you could choose new knives and go for another year, or you could find new partners and do it again; lots of variations on the basic theme are possible.

Just think: 66 new knives per year to play with!! Not exactly an economic stimulus package, though.

Here are my 2 #38 Farmer Jacks along with a vintage Henckels of the same size & pattern. The Henckels is very similar but a little heavier and slightly thicker stock for the master blade

The light in this picture is poor so the blade thicknesses are not showing up well. I will try for a better picture when the right light presents itself.

Hi Joe,that Henckels Is a hefty knife and with a wild grind on the hawk bill. The worm groove jigging is amazing, great knife Bro.

Best regards

Robin

Really pleased everyone is enjoying this pattern. The knives in this frame are about all I've collected since getting serious with this hobby.

Joe,that Henckels is a beauty, you should post it in the rooster thread.I tried getting one like that the other day :),even though I have three Henckels... That's a nice example.

Having carried each variation of the pattern, I have to say I love them all.
Right now, the Northwoods is getting the most pocket time. Perfect blade selection for me. As much as I love the whittler, I'm really a two-blade guy at heart, and a wharncliffe is perfect for my needs.
There's something really special about this pattern.

Very useful shot Sub showing different masters, thank you.

Yes the frame offers a lot of different possibilities and I hope we will see more variations of the two blade one spring theme. I think the Northwoods has an admirable Wharncliffe but I wasn't really taken by any of the handle choices.

Regards, Will

GEC did a great job with these knives. I hope to add a few more to my collection.

I'd like to see a 2-blade with a clip main and wharncliffe secondary. I always like a clip main and sheepfoot/wharncliffe secondary but one nice thing about that combination is that the clip blade sits low in the #38 frame.
