about this time last year ? i started designing a 3D printable wave mod that could clip over a spydie hole .
i got busy (for a year ) and just finished my design this week .....
today i picked it up from the printer and clipped it to my spyderco UKPK !!

here was the original thread ....
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1132683-3d-printable-wave-mod

this mod was designed to custom fit the UKPK but one could be made for any knife including over thumbstuds .
it functions very well , thumb opening actually feels great , waves out like a champ !
the 3D print process i used actually leaves a gymping like grippy texture .
this was printed in ABS (think lego) but i think Nylon would be even better
it need a little refinement (had to warm it up a bit to fit it ) .

hope you guys like it
would love to hear what you think Sal !

Well that's quite awesome! I would have never considered doing that! I was seriously looking at a delica with the wave. With that feature, you could do that with any spyderco knife! Hello paramilitary!

How easy is it to get on and off?

I like it but maybe you could come up with a different name?? I believe "wave" is already being used. ;)

allready thought about the paramilitary , did some concepts ..unfortunately i dont own one :(

as far as on and off its only just gone on , and that was a little hairy ..i had to heat it a bit but its locked on there now and waves sweeet

i think it might snap it i take it on and off being made of ABS and medium resolution printing .
a bit of tweeking and i think if it were printed high res in Nylon it would go on and off lots of times ...

I think you have a closet business forming, depending on the costs per unit, time involved, etc. I'd love to see one for other knives, especially a Manix I have. I guess the question now becomes whether the force needed to open the blade, depending on the geometry involved, is greater than the structural strength of the material and design used. Or some such nonsense.

so far this ABS plastic seems pretty tough Ive been waving it out of my pocket for the last couple of hrs . i think Nylon would be a much better material though.

Cool. I'm more curious about which printer you used to make this and what software if it was a separate company. Also, was this done at a work place or school or ??? Cube or Projet by chance?

Reason being, I follow 3D printing companies and find it fascinating what can be done. Some professionals have made prosthetics for dogs that turned out to be very effective. The uses seem to be unlimited and growing.

Thanks for sharing.

it was printed on an " UP mini " medium resolution i think

I know nothing of printing, but I would seriously reconsider my next purchase if and when I could get my hands on one of those. Because I was pretty locked in to a delica.

The Awesomer had a story on a prototype prosthetic foot for people. I love it -- make modified legs for different activities.

"spydie catch"
"spyder-claw"

u think of somethin :D

I actually really like spyder-claw.

I really like the looks of this. I agree with you that nylon would probably be a better material, but ABS is pretty tough stuff most of the time. I'm very interested in the long term structural integrity with repeated wave openings.

Hi Bradlox,

I'd like to try one on my UK. Can I buy one from you?

sal

That would be an honor ! I could send you a file and you could get one printed ? shoot me a pm and i can give you the details .

EDIT -- i should have said you'll get one for free of course ! I'm not selling stuff on BF right now , i don't have my gold membership anymore
