Hey Charlie - would "High Relief Work " would be the term when describing the Shields? that term is used when describing the Japanese Art Swords, Tsubas etc, when you study the work of High relief detailed on Tsuba, Menuki etc it is mind blowing ( a Fantastic Reference is a Book of the Collection of Joe Earle - you will see such amazing detiled work- that if you had the money would lure you into a spinning - never ending spiral of helplessness.
Very much like us with the Knives- but with the small treasures like Joe Earle- House money often wouldnt come near to obtaining one "Simple" Tsuba
Considering there was no such thing as Electric drills etc, Magnifying glasses etc in the earlier days when such exquisite work was executed on extremely hard Iron, the work was- and still is spell binding- if you havent looked Joes Collection up- you should.
