3rd Knife WIP

All sorted. I just had to wait for the funds to go through. Cmon people! opinions on which handle i should do.

Red gum is one of my all-time favorites but that jarrah is pretty sweet as well, I would think you should be happy with either!

Actually, since you already cut all those scales I say make one of each ;)

How about a synthetic material such as Blue/Black G-10? Micarta would work wonderfully as well

Looks awesome!

I think after cutting out all that wood you should just profile out some more steel and do one of these in all the different handles!!:p

Seriously, I like the Wenge the best:thumbup:

thanks everyone. jonny maybe i will make a few in the same profile. i'll keep this one but after that im going to be selling my knives at cost of material in the custom section. don't know how many ill do at that price. a few anyway. want to get my name out there.

Knife is all packaged up with my first 2 blades ready to bed sent to HT. So, that's all the updates for a while i'd say. I think it'll probably take 2 weeks to get them back. So don't forget to subscribe to the thread so you can see the finished knife *thumbs up*

Nice WIP and pretty darn good for a 3rd knife. I like the Kwila. :)

Whereabouts in Brisbane are you? I lived in St Lucia for about a year back in '04.

Exciting, i ordered 1m of RWL - 34 a couple of days ago. Cant wait to start making something again. Between having knives away at heat treat and no steel left here I'm a bit lost on what to do this weekend :D.

Scale preference tally:

Wenge - 3
Red Gum - 1
Kwila - 2
Jarrah -
Other Gum -
Maple -
Rock Maple -
Beech -
Walnut -

Certainly looking much better than my 3rd knife did.

I'm curious, you're from Australia but Ringed Gidgee isn't on your list, seems to be hard to get here in the States but how hard is it to get over there?

Thanks Destraal!

I'm not really sure, I haven't tried to track any timbers down yet. All the stuff i have are just bits that were lying around work (furniture makers).

Sat down to draw out some more designs yesterday (since my steel hasn't arrived yet and my other blades are in for HT) and i think I've found the next project. I'm starting to sense a pattern on how these things work. I draw 10+ quick design and from them 1 design really stands out. So i refine the drawing and get excited about feeling the design in my hand.

Anyway, here's what i came up with -

I forgot to add a lanyard hole and i might do some sort of jimping on the sweep before the blade, so it's not a finalized design but i think it's pretty close.

and here's another idea. It's a bit of a funny shape, so I've labeled it in my mind "mini chopper" if there was ever a use for one. The design needs some work but it could be pretty cool too.

Got my first 3 blades back from Hill Heat Treat today. Very exciting. Painfully i don't think ill have much time to work on them this weekend but im sure going to try.

Here they are, fresh from HT.

Those look great! A tanto is quite the project to tackle! That drop-point on top looks really good, definitely a design worth repeating in my opinion...

Your not wrong. I chose a tanto to be my first knife because the i thought "surely a couple of straight edges is easier than a curve". haha
