3rd Knife WIP

Tim,
Nice to see the blades made it back and you're ready to start finishing them! They all look great and I wish you the best on putting it all together. I'm familiar with both of the fixed blades, but didn't know you were working on a folder as well. Looking forward to seeing how that turns out!!

thanks bigshow. thanks johnny. yeah i have posted the folder on here while i was making it. unfortunately it was the first i think and the grind is way to short because i was using AO belts and probably got sick of it. still a good experience though. bit of a headache making everything work properly though. i should be able to work on these all weekend but ill probably do it in order of what i made first. so depending on how smooth every thing goes is to weather i start number 3. updates soon. Tim.

If the folder grind is too short use a 60 grit belt and move it up. Lots of guys grind heat treated blades. Keep cool and spend the energy on getting like you want. You will enjoy the folder much more if it's like you want.

Thanks for the kind comments everyone!

Thanks for the suggestion Goode

To be honest the whole folder could have been executed better. Everything works how it should, there's just room for improvement in everything. The lock works well but there's a bit of blade play up and down because one of the stop pins are a little off. The handle scales are a bit chunky because i didn't have any countersunk screws so i had to countersink into the scales instead limiting how thin i could make the scales. The grind is a bit shallow because well it was pretty much my first attempt. The thumb stud was rushed and i didn't really think about positioning and it's a bit small (uncomfortable to open).

So i don't think i'll bother trying to re-work the grind because the whole thing needs re-working. I'll just leave it as an average first attempt and try again some time now i have more screws etc.

Here's some pictures anyway.

Going to go start finishing the tanto now.

Tim.

Grate job, everything looks really good. I've been wanting to get started knife making knives but it's kinda intimidating. Anyway good luck with your knife making ill check back to see the progress. Keep up the good work.

Looking good! Always nice to have something to do while waiting for glue to dry:D

Thanks Jonny. It would be torture just waiting for glue to try :D

Thanks.

Well I've completed the tanto minus a handle finish. I think i'll use a simple run on like oil or wax.

Not getting much time to work on my knife today because it's my birthday. Woo. But here's what I've done so far.

Sharpening.

Scales all drilled ready to be glued.

That's probably all for today though, people are arriving.

More later,
Tim.

I was out late at a Metallica concert last night woO! So today i took the day off today to sleep in. Which means i also get to do some more on my knife. I had to re-drill the scales again taking a more thought out approach because the holes weren't lining up properly and using these tiny corbys are annoying because i have to counter the hole quite deep. But that's all i had when i designed and drilled the pin holes. Anyway, it's all drilled, pinned and currently gluing up in the nice. On the home stretch now!

More when the glues dried. I've gotta go wash my dog.

Thanks Jonny, it was an excellent show.

Sorry i haven't posted recently. Haven't had a chance to sit down lately. What am i up to? The handle's all shaped and sanded up to 240grit but my predicament now is weather to do the cross hash texturing on the belly of the handle. Originally i had planned to have lighter scales and use some dark stain in the texturing but wengee is a pretty "busy" timber with lines going everywhere so i thought it might get lost in it all. Either that or it would be another subtle detail that added to it. What do you think? Opinions encouraged and welcomed.

Anyway, here's some pictures.

Scales profiled on the bandsaw then sander.

Profile all cleaned up and slightly tapered from the pins down to the belly (not that you can see it on this picture)

Since that last picture i've also counter sunk the lanyard hole a bit and sanded the handle up to 240.

Now i just need to decide on the detailing/texture of the belly.
More soon.

is that the final handle shape?
it could use a little more rounding, imo

blade looks great!
im a big fan of drop points
cant wait to see it 100%

you gonna make a sheath for it too?
