$400 for a stinkin' folder. Are you nuts?

Are a set of set $1500 Rims for a car any better than stock? Is a Pistol from Wilson Combat $2000 better than a Springfield Armory 1911? To some people they are. Is a Sebbie worth $400 I don’t know but hopefully I'll find out for myself. I could care less if someone thinks I’m crazy or not, I work hard for my money and I’ll spend it the way I want.

I am very new to knife "buying". I thought it would be rediculous to spend $300 on one knife. I added up my $100 knives I bought since Jan.1, 2006. It came to $1,800.00. I just ordered a new Busse. I reallized for $1,800 I could have had fewer but better knives. I had bought 14 nearly identical fixed hunting knives. I am not rich, but I own many good guns. In my business I work with people who are rich. I help design boats that sell for 23 million dollars (each). You would not believe what people pay or toys on these boats. The price of our toys is a function of our desires and our ability to buy. I read on a knife site where someone paid $20,000 for a "used, old" Bob Loveless knife. I am sure it was worth it to him and had nothing to do with its ability to cut things. No one can say what something is worth to some one else. It is only when our toys get in the way of our living and providing for our family that the cost really comes into question. My niece married a man (boy) who allowed his "rock climber" (fancy jeep) and its costs/use to destory their marriage. He finally chose the jeep over her and their two kids. Now that is too expensive.
(I think I let this get away from me, sorry).

I see some posts like that from time to time. I am really curious - why would you do that? Why 14 same knives?

If you believe that, well, that is very cute.

How many Buck 110's from the late 60's are still going strong? How many people have carried the same SAK or Case, or Schrade slipjoint for the past few decades? Quite a few if you take the time to browse this forum.

I think taking out a loan and going into debt over a few $400 apple cutters, well, that is just adorable.

Uhhhhhhh, let me take a stab at this one....it would appear that the man collects hunting knives, and they may seem "nearly idnetical" to an untrained eye, but not to the person putting together the collection.

I collect all different styles of knives that have stag handles in common; custom, production, fixed blades and folders, large and small. But, I also collect Barlows, mostly stag but some bone. Now you may say. "Hey Dude, why do you have so many of the same knife?" But, they're all different to me and I can identify them blindfolded.

Exactly. That's the difference between collecting and using, something which too many people on this thread are confusing.

There's also nothing wrong with buying the best, even if the slight increment in quality over second-best costs A LOT.

Or Filson wouldn't sell so much as a pair of socks.

Oh, I understand the reasons for collectors. However, since some posters were discussing price vs. usability, I was alluding to the usability of the knife, not its value as a collector's item. Clearly, with 14 nearly-identical knives there would not be sufficient difference in usability to justify it, or would there be?

No way am I going to spend $400 on a knife - no matter how nice it is - why ? - cause you can get very very nice knives for $100-$200!

Reply to why 14 nearly identical knives. I was new at it and kept seeing the next "best" hunting knife in newest steel. I just had to have one of every type of steel (still missing VG10). Also, several new nives came on the market. I also discovered new brands, etc. If i had realized what was happening, I would not have bought some of the first one bought. But who knew about the other new ones. I like all of them a lot and will use them. i am a scout master and I have 18 grand kids (14 boys) and they will all learn batoning, hunting etc. with my knives. Did I mention the 21 folders bought during the same time. My wife thinks I'm crazy. Could be. No cure in site.
Ron.

To PhilL,
One of my former scouts collects Barlows. I am not familair with them but he is very proud of his collection (about 200 knives, not all Barlows).
Just a side comment.

I love this LMFAO! I have had people ask me why would you spend that much on a knife and I point at their BMW or their $200,000.00 home. They shut up quick, or say "but those things are useful". I usually reply "With this I could take your BMW away from you." (Then I giggle as they trip over themselves trying to change the subject) I hate sheeple!!!:D But seriously I have to say "You only get what you pay for". Factory knives are great but customs go the extra distance in materials and craftsmanship. If I had the choice between a BM 710 (as mentioned earlier) or a Strider I would buy the Strider. I have broken the blade on a 710 but you would have to be really talented to break a 1/4" thick bladed Strider.

Ron, not to add to your addictions, but "not familiar" with Barlow's is not acceptable. Barlow's are a classic slipjoint pattern from the 18th century.
Here's a reccent thread about Barlow's and some other slipjoint patterns.

For the record I do have a custom Barlow on order that will be well above $400, just to get back to the original thread topic. :D

Yes, as a matter of fact I am nuts, just ask my friends and my gf. :D

Still though, the Strider in my pocket is sweet as all get out.

Easy I'd just shut it in the hatch of a bradley. It'd take about oh 3 seconds. I don't find myself very talented either :D

Details! I want details!

This is too funny. The guys who will spend $100 or so, think that someone who spends $400 is nuts, fail to see that they're the same as the masses who think they're nuts for spending $100.

I just took the family to Toronto to see the Yankees play.Up one afternoon home the next. Dropped $500-$600 easy. Next year I won't even rmember the score .

Perhaps.
But hopefully your family will always be able to look back on the occasion in fond memory.

Allen, yes you're right about memories. But my point was to show that when it costs $4-$500 for a over night to see a ball game, $400 for someone to build me a knife seems ok.
