I dont think anyone has mentioned it, but Kevin showed me a neat little gun when I was having this very problem. It's a H&R Survivor. It's a single barrel, but it shoots .410 or .45LC and it is readily available and completely affordable. Nice little take on the M6 idea, including the storage compartment in the buttstock.

NEF makes the Survivor in .223 and .308 as well. The recoil from the .308 is rather stout, though, since the package is so light.
