4116 vs. 5Cr15MoV vs. 4034SS

4034 is a PRC made steel right? Signing a contract for a steel then delivering a different steel when the contracting company is waiting for a product to be delivered is a standard PRC business technique. They figure that if you even test the steel you will be so desperate for the contracted product that you will accept delivery anyways. Other companies have been caught up in this before and there will be more of it in the future. It's worth it to pay a little more and work with reputable vendors who you can have your own purchased steel sent to.

It's Cold Steel's reputation and relationship with it's regular customers that now is suffering not the vendor that twice refused to deliver the agreed on product. The vendor will go about doing the same thing to the next guy. If you want to buy one of their products and rebrand it in their 8C or whatever steel they regularly use things will go easier. The funny thing is their is enough overlap in the steel they use composition to where they can call it 440A, 440C, 8C, 9C, 4034, 420HC and whatever else they think you want them to call the same steel.

Can we go back to 2014 and before and get our knives in AUS8? I can’t believe I’m saying this in 2020 but I’m not surprised anymore. I gotta say, CS is one of the very few companies that actually downgraded steel for the same model. E.g. micro recon 1 mentioned above.
Survival Lily did a review of her SRK in AUS8. She used and abused it for years. Never chipped, never rolled, easy to sharpen in the field. I would take AUS8 too.

What would a reasonable alternative be for a Trail Master ? ESEE Junglas ? Becker BK9 ?
Don't know about the Trailmaster, but if you want a fine Recon Scout type knife, the Drop Forged survivalist is a real winner!

I can see why people are upset the hallowed Trailmaster is going to be a budget beater blade. Haven't they done that before with the SK-5 Trailmaster?

4034 is budget compared to SK-5 honestly. SK-5 is decent carbon steel while 4034 is liner material or gas station knives material.

Aus8 is the lowest grade I will purchase for anything non disposable. And I damn sure won't purchase any Chinese steel trash. If I wanted flea market knives I would go to a flea market -- or in this case a Wet Market.

I have been a Cold Steel fanatic, customer, and advocate since the 1980s. I actively looked for excuses to justify buying another CS knife or product (just bough a Drop Forged Hunter and a Sjambok last couple weeks). Any time someone asks for a knife recommendation it has always been Cold Steel.

I am basically over it. I feel like they are exploiting their once great name to make a quick buck off people who aren't paying attention. That's just my opinion of course, and I really hate saying it, but I can't come up with any other explanation that makes any sense at all.

To say that the Trailmaster and Recon scout are going to be released in A2 and then after a long wait have it said that itll not happen, and switch to 4034 is really pulling the rug out from underneath everyone.I mean that change is so huge thats why its so unacceptable. If they went back to 01 it would still be disappointing but not shock and awe. Id rather see a further delay untill a good steel is used rather than it come out like a 9 1/2" Kraton handled car bumper from Bud K...

They didn't just downgrade from A2 and 3V, they went all the way to flea market and gas station grade and they are trying to pretend that it's just as good. Plastic jewelry might seem like diamonds and gold if you are a five year old girl playing with her Elsa jewelry set, but I'm not five and I know better.

A car bumper might just be better steel.

The sheath scratches my O1 trailmaster slightly. As easy to scratch as 4034 is I imagine the new models in that steel will be troublesome. They will scratch the first time they are used in the sheath and will have to be sent out in a cardboard sleeve to prevent it. No one wants to open a brand new knife box and find a scratched up knife.

I expect that those would roll badly when I'd hit a bone or harder branch with them, because those are common things to happen on flea market knives made out of same material. I saw numerous pictures in reviews.
