5" Fixed blade for daily carry and backpacking

Some excellent recommendations here. Here's a light one that is in my rotation, a Benchmade Fixed Griptilian. Good stainless 154CM, 5 inch blade, 4.6 oz., ~$80 bucks

If you notice my picture I modded it to remove the thumb ramp and sanded the handle ridges to reduce hotspots. Coupled with a Farmer or a Skeletool, it is a nice, light hiking, camping combo. Also note that the sheath can be worn vertically or horizontally. Cheers :)

Can't go wrong with a RAT-4. I carry it almost every day behind my hip. When I need something more discreet the RAT Izula comes into play. At that time the rat-4 goes into my maxpedition fatboy as back-up.

Lots of good suggestion here! Since you like the RC-4 and the convex grind of the Fallkniven I'll suggest that you go ahead with the RC-4 and then have it convexed! There several folks on the forum that will convex the edge for you but I sent my RC-4 to Bark River and had them do a full convex grind. It's sharp as the dickens now and very easy to maintain. If you are concerned about rust just keep a thin layer of mineral oil on it and be sure to wipe it dry if you get it wet. I'll also suggest the Sharpshooter RC-4 sheath from KnivesShipFree. It's EEP treated and fits like a glove.

+1 for custom makers. JK knives is running a special this month on his hiker (only a 4 inch blade though) for 100 bucks shipped. I've got one on order myself. And I feel that there's not alot you can do with a 5" blade that you cant do with a 4" blade. Go check out john's forums.

Scrapyard is going to be posting pics of the new Scrapper 5 real soon.

You might want to check that out.

Thank you for all of the advise and suggestions everyone. I ended up going for the Rat Cutlery RC-4, I just received it on Friday--I love it. Outstanding sheath, I carry it horizontal on my belt across my back with the included para-cord. The fit and finish is flawless, blade is sharp out of the box, and the knife has a great balance and feel to it. The fact that is it made by hard-working Americans is a big plus for me as well (I like to support the local economy and workers).

Great work Rat Cutlery :thumbup::thumbup:
