hey all
I lost the thread we talked about this on..
it was about the control shaft steel that Ed and others are using.
anyway
I found the supplier (or one of them at least)
that I may be able to get some from.
the steel part # that Johndeere uses is
#JD5160
being just steel and not a manufactured part hopefully it will be less money
to obtain..

I just got an email from Fox reminding me of the thread ,
I dropped ball on ,
,I did so in part
because I felt there wasn't enough interest in it.
and then again I don't think I asked?

if you guys are interested in some please let me know,,I sure don't need a ton of it
but maybe we can spread some out if a lot has to be bought at a time.
not sure yet about that..

Thanks Dan, that steel is really great and when we apply what has been learned in the last 7 years to working it up into knives there will be many high performance blade produced.

Did you get a price and compare it to Kelly Cupples or other places. Is it better than getting coil springs from the scrap yard, they are cheap. 1" or larger seems interesting to me too. Just let me know how much we need to get and how you want to split it up.

Larry

Me personaly I would love to get about 10' of it if it's not too expensive and if I can get it in larger than 1" round.

Any word Dan?

Thanks

I tried calling the local John Deere dealer and they told me that the part number that Dan posted "JD5160" wasn't any good. Must be used at the factory level. Ron

Ron I think that's Deere's supplier's number. You probably did, but you might also ask the dealer about any used shafts that were changed out of other machines.

Meanwhile Dan, I'd add some of the stuff to my steel pile, so count me in. Then I bet Ed would help us all get the magic out of it. ;)

Holliday today
man some places will take any days that they can off won't they hahaha ;)

I hope she'll get back to me
I'll recheck later in the week if she doesn't..

R.Duncan
yes Factory/foundry level
the dealers don't sell steel so it won't be in thier IPL's
this stuff is made to JD's spec's by the looks
even though it's 5160 I think the specs are held closer I'll try to get
some hard numbers on it too.

to get info from JD( dealers ) is like pulling teeth their puters always point back to the Factory..they don't like dealing with the so called little guy..
but on the retail end they don't mind the money... :)

thanks for the reminder...
NO not yet I'll check again tomorow and see if I can shake some trees..

I'm in Dan. Thanks for doing the footwork. Can we co-op on other materials? It'd seem to make sense that more=cheaper with other knife making materials. I am thinking Huge chunks of Maple Burl, 10'x10' slabs of Micarta etc. What'ya think?

No not at all Dan, I was referring to the other Dan (a.k.a. Danbo), but if you happen to have some W2 you want to give away, I would certainly accept a package from you as well ;) .
