No not at all Dan, I was referring to the other Dan (a.k.a. Danbo), but if you happen to have some W2 you want to give away, I would certainly accept a package from you as well ;) .

yeah.. Dan e-mailed me to tell me I wasn't loosing my mind. :)
:D I may send you some 5160 just to torment you :D

No torment at all, I occasionally do some blacksmithing type projects and run out of clean material in my scrap pile ;) .

I do need to be careful since Danbo has already threatened to produce one of the first blades of mine he ever saw made from... :o

Johndeere control shaft steel
OK GUYs Up date
good new and bad new's, the bad news a death..

I called again
The lady and guy that owns the place that I contacted, her husband died of cancer the other day so this is the reason for not getting back to me.

the Good news
for you guys that want the one and only Johndeere control shaft steel.
:D
I talked to a guy named Mark this morning at the same place I spoke of.

he needs to clear it with the lady Karen first but it looks good.

I can get the acual cut off ends of the control shafts when they cut them to length for Johndeere for thier Shafts..
round bars from 1.019 to over 1 1/4" I think he said.
these will be random lengths anywhere from 4" to over a foot.

he needs to talk to Karen for pricing and get the OK.

I'll start a new thread for this when the time comes

This will at the very least make for a good way for beginners to
get a brake in cost for good clean known steel to play with.

and in the soft aneiled state (i think, don't qoute me..)..
it looks like I may be able to get around 200 pounds a month.
cost in shipping will be one of the big things..

I'll let you know what the prices will be so you can let me know what you want..
this has to be done on a bigger scale then one guy ordering small amounts from them so they don't have to mess with small orders,
kind of co,oped. yes that was a good Idea too for other things...
if someone has the time.. :)

Hey Dan, for shipping this stuff, keep in mind the new USPS Flat Rate boxes....there is one that is 14" long, and you are allowed to ship up to 70 pounds in one of these boxes, and only costs $7.70! Also, if you set up a USPS account online, you can order a pickup of packages from your front porch for free. Otherwise, Fedex, is by far the cheapest shipper hands down on heavier items... Just FYI, hope this helps! :)

thanks Darren
I'm on line with both UPS and USPS
it's getting it here with as little shipping as posable that conserns me.
200 pounds by truck maybe? I'll check out the options..
just have to see who wants how much after I get the prices.

yep - that's the way to go.

Look forward to hearing back about the $$$, Dan. Hopefully $ and not $$$$$$.

:D :p

I was only speaking about for when you ship it out to all of us who want some... btw, I'll throw my hat in the ring on some too. :)

Shipping by truck to you may be the best method, but may not be either. As a point of reference, I shipped a 350 pound order from Knoxville, TN to Texarkana, TX and freight was only something like $65 or so. It was the cheapest option I could find for the buyer. On the flip side, I shipped an order that weighted in around 170 pounds total (if memory serves me correctly) to Los Angeles, CA and it turned out that shipping via Fedex was cheaper than by truck! Go figure!? Also, keep in mind that if you have something shipped to a business address it is always cheaper than home delivery...but you probably know all of that...you've been in business for yourself much longer than I have...

You'd think it might be enough work cleaning up 12 copies of this spam, but noooooooooo, you gotta quote it and make a 13th copy for me to clean up.....

I don't know if I posted it beore but I would be interested in going in on the %160 as well.

I would take some of the steel also, if we can obtain a good uniform consistent steel and have several using the same steel, we could easily set up some experiments for all to work on and achieve high performance blades through the combined efforts of all who wish to contribute.
I would be more than willing to do some initial work on the steel, share the information with all who are participating and collectively we could explore together. I am very excited and thank you for your efforts in obtaining it.

Coug actually
I didn't think of it that way
I sell knives, I'm not a supplier by any means, in terms of making money at it at least.

this is something that is so hard to get and has been wanted by so many of the forgers here
that I thought it was helping not selling same as with
another steel I've pasted on the savings too that I make zero on, counting time I actually loose money on it.
.is this any different than moderators advertising in their signatures? not to point fingers...
and just yesterday on a resurrected thread a formite mentioned (this is why you should buy from me)
my point...
These guys asked me to pursue this and that was my intent and I didn't think about a selling point,,,

I apologize to you all, the point of selling for a profit did not and was not the intent here..
.. if you want me to pursue this for you,, please start a thread where it is appropriate
and I will up date you on my finding..

I don't feel you need to offer any apologies, Dan, and I appreciate your efforts. Folks are always asking where to get this or that and we all post links to commercial suppliers in response, so how is that okay and this isn't? I wonder, if someone started a thread asking if anyone knows where to get some 5160 John Deere shaft material, if someone could then say, "Hey, talk to Dan Gray, think he may have a possible link on some." Let's find out! :D - Jim

I do appreciate that and ,,,selling is a no no other than in the sellers forum
I do know that.. this in my mind was not advertising any more than anyone
advertising in their signature or even in a forum name ( handle). this was brought on by and lead to by interest from
the guys here wanting to know how to get this steel..this is what I was doing..

before i give this up I do want an answer and reply from Cougar to my questions. as in respect to each other.
and the other moderators may put forth their thoughts to what I just said in my last post....
