5160 johndeere shaft steel update.

Dan - I think Cougar's "Edit" of your post was just to remove the part where you quoted the spammer who posted ahead of you.

That spammer hit several forums and was banned quickly.

You are not being targeted for selling anything here.

You can see that "phonesellersinc" has 12 posts - all of them spam. Cougar just went down the line editing each one out to remove the spam. Since you quoted him, he had to remove yours too (making it 13).

Please continue on where you left off, Dan. There is no ill will directed at you.

Or, how about this?

Just start a new thread when you get the price-per-pound from the distributor.

I would take some of the steel also, if we can obtain a good uniform consistent steel and have several using the same steel, we could easily set up some experiments for all to work on and achieve high performance blades through the combined efforts of all who wish to contribute.
I would be more than willing to do some initial work on the steel, share the information with all who are participating and collectively we could explore together. I am very excited and thank you for your efforts in obtaining it.

will do Ed,, and thank you , I was getting pretty excided too..
though it don't feel like I'm helping a lot after some of my posts being pulled :( .
I'm not sure just how far I can go with this here,, I'll try to get the spec's of the steel for you and see how consistent it will be.. being made for JD and it from the control shafts thenselves I'm sure it will be good stuff..
but we'll see :) thanks for being my push with this..

Dan, no problem here. I think to every one that has been following this, it was an offer on your part to help get some metal that has been tough to get and you weren't doing it for any gain. I don't see any conflict - but maybe that's why I'm not a moderator either.

NOw isn't that embarrassing :o

I'll tell you what

it sure would help to be on the same page when I get a post edited by a monitor. with My memory the way it is I forgot that
post for cell phones ahhh what a dope I am... :o

OK I got a little head way on this today...

?? what is the shortest piece you guys can live with at min 1.019 round.
available will be
bar diameters 1.019, 1.144, 1.207, and 1.375

I'm thinking for myself 3" - 4" long at least,,
but they want to know if we can use any shorter? I know some will be up to 9"

guys tell me what you think.. ??

Same here, Dan. I don't mind the short pieces.

If I had to, I'd say no shorter than 3 inches - kinda hard to hold on to and forge under that.

Any diameter is fine with me. I'll take whatever I can get.

you might try shipping in the usps priority mail flat rate boxes, they'll ship as much weight as you can stuff in there for like $8, got a package the other day that must have been close to 60 or 70 pounds that was shipped this way.

I'm still in, for me about 4" maybe a little longer would be perfect for hawks. Preferably the 1.375 dia.

I could go for about 10' worth, however that figures in pounds and shipping.

thanks guys
looks like as far as shipping to me goes they use UPS and have their own box
so at this point I don't know what shipping to me will be.

things,, I hope will pick up soon ,,
I guess things are still messed up because of the death of the owner..so I'm not pushing them..not too bad anyway..

Dan, I need pieces that are 9" - 12" in length, all preferably in the 1.375" diameter, but I can easily use the 1.019 diameter if they are in the lengths I need.

in the box that they will ship with, the max it will take is 9"
remember these are cut offs of the control shafts
so I'm not sure of the length of the stock they start with..
I will check on shafts or over 9" also..

hey Guys just an up date.
don't give up the ship yet :(

I just got off the phone with the boss lady herself for the 5160 JD control shaft steel..
problem has been, none left right now until the next run.
the ends are considered scrap and they sell it to a scrap guy..
now,,,, she is going to find out what she's getting for it from him.

now thinking, as you may see what's happening in my mind here..
I have to make it worth the bother for her to ship it to me..
SO I still don't have a price but she said she'd call me in the next run in about 2 weeks... as you may figure this is just a drop in the bucket to them so I'm thinking it's not a high priority on the list for them..
so I'll just have to be persistent,
without being a bother to them..so steady as she goes, I'm on it..
once this gets set it should be smooth sailing :)

I haven't seen anything in this thread that looks like selling stuff directly. (I didn't see the SPAM thing tho) Forming a CO-OP is a really good idea, and its not selling to others, its buying for yourself, and sharing.

It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to get some sort of group set up to help buy all different kinds of things in bulk, and at a nice lower price, perhaps another forum here. Knifemaker Power-Buying Forum...

Happy Hunting
Ben

waiting for new thread.....:(

:p :footinmou

(Thanks for the update, DanG)

Guys-

Why would you NEED long lengths? Making really big stuff?

I can easily get an 8" bowie/fighter out of a 3" long chunk of W1 round-stock.

I weld a handle on and away I go.

Just wondering :)

Nick
it's looking like
2" and up to maybe 9"
I told them basically 3" and up so I don't end up with all 2" pieces if you know what I mean,,
I'm thinking if you have a longer piece, then less welding
,,,like two for one deal time wize :)

OT
Nick
did you find out about, if that article on you will be hosted for a while??
let me have that link again and I'll post it on the knife making site ASAP
I'll be out all day tomorrow, but I'll get at it soon..I haven't forgoten :)

No welder, Nick. :( Anyway, I use it for larger full tang knives. The larger pieces are needed to accommodate both length and width.
