586 Mini-Barrage M390

Mine arrived where the blade was a bit tight. What i mean is that if i let the spring open the blade sometimes it would not go all the way to lock. If i flicked my wrist a bit then it would lock every single time. If i held the blade and slowly let the blade open i could feel that it was really tight as it reached the stop pin. I loosened one of the stop pin screws by about a 1/4 of a turn and that did the trick. Works fine now. Hopefully that minor adjustment doesn't blow my warranty.

Thanks jkarp, in this case it is definitely the lock, I can make it rattle by touching it with my finger. It's quite loose when in the "unlock" position. When in the "locked" position there is no rattle at all because of the tension. I dislike locks anyway so I may look into removing it altogether, if possible.

Love the knife though!

I guess I should clarify, when I say lock I am talking about the safety on the top of the knife. Not the axis-lock. Sorry for the confusion.

Well I took apart the 586 while I watched the MN Wild lose to the Blackhawks in OT tonight. I successfully removed the safety and the assist spring/coil and dare I say I like the knife even more now. :D

Did you disassemble the knife? If not, then you're fine. eschwebach, OTOH... ;)

That makes more sense.

Seriously Loonybin, I didn't so much disassemble the knife... I made minor structural enhancements via material extraction. ;) THAT part of the warranty was clearly not written for beings of higher intelligence such as myself. :D Now, where did I put that pivot screw???

I have made minor enhancements as well, such as polishing the PB washers, replacing the liners, etc. I must be of higher intelligence also!

Clearly, it is good to know I am no longer alone in the world. :)

BTW, this thread needs pics. I wish I had a better locale for the pics but it snowed last night and I didn't feel like traipsing around in it. (Living in MN sucks sometimes).

I couldn't choose between the Volli or the Mini Barrage the other day, so I went ahead and ordered both

While I like both of them, I think I'll keep the Mini Barrage. The Volli is really nice and at a great price point, but doesn't really fill a need in my EDC rotation.

Dan, I must say, you have great taste. Either that, or you just like everything!

Thanks guys.
I've been on the fence on the 581 since it came out. Love it, but it's a bit too big to carry. And "kinda pricey." Now this comes out for a whopping $7 less, and I just can't resist any longer.
Looks like I'll get to compare BM's M390 to Spyderco's, in just a few days.
I'll need to re-read the removal of the safety-lock - that's always bugged me about the Barrage.
(It was a cinch to remove on my Leek.)

Anyone have a photo of the 586 scale, say from the left side, removed? I'm curious to know if the thing is two piece or one. I'm thinking about replacing them with custom slabs. A pic or two would be appreciated~!

Jkarp, I don't have pics but I can tell you that the scales are two pieces on both sides of the knife. The aluminum bolster is one piece and the G10 is another piece. The bolster section has a tongue that fits underneath the G10 section. The only issue I can see with making one large scale is you have to take the whole scale of to adjust the pivot if need be. Is that what you were looking for?

Yes it is, I thought the two parts must be tongue and groove, and full replacement scales wouldn't be difficult, just takes four screws like the stock 585 models would. Thanks...!

The Mini-Barrage is a beautiful knife, but the handle thickness and weight is a little too much for me. Besides, I have an M4 Mini-Grip on the way. The Mini-Grip is a little thinner and over an ounce lighter than the Mini-Barrage. That should take care of my needs for an Axis-lock EDC. And there's always the Sequel if I need something even thinner and lighter than the Mini-Grip. ;)

Got my 586 today.
Feels solid, like a little bushcrafter that happens to fold.
Even better in hand than my recollection of the (Valox-scaled) mini-Barrage.
I did notice, if I try really hard, I can get the blade to rock a bit - but I sure don't feel that in use.
Plus, I can never again complain about Benchmades coming dull out of the box. Holy cow - I could shave with this thing.
Very impressed.

Figure I'd add a picture :)

I just placed an order for one of these beauties and can't wait to get my hands on it!
