59 and have never needed a tactical

I am rebuilding my collection and buying a few knives just to try. Monday I bought a blue Case Sodbuster Jr. because I had gifted mine sometime back, two Sowbellies a Colt and a RR to compare to my Case and a Ontario Rat-1 to see what the hype was about. I am a bit older than the OP and have never had to use any knife for self-defense. I have a Glock 23 for that and pray I never have to use it. As for the Rat-1 I have fondled it a few times and come to the conclusion I don't need it as I have no idea what I would ever use it for because my slipjoints do everything I could possibly need a knife for and I just like them better. Now I am trying to decide what to do with the Rat gift it or sell it.

How do most of you carry your traditional? Loose in a pocket or in a sheath. I've always gotten the "look" when wearing a sheath, especially in urban settings.

I have only used a knife in a tactical situation one time. An unwelcome guest arrived at my parents home when I was working in their yard, and I was forced to act:

That dirty blade is a Bark River City Knife, and was very effective. :)

Hey, just a thought if you do decide to gift it there is a pay it forward thread that is taking off. I know I haven't been here long but I think it's worth a look-see either way.

Loose in pocket for me. Generally will use the watch pocket if wearing jeans. Right rear pocket if not.

Drop loose in right front pocket and a bandana loosely wadded up and shoved down on top of it. Been doing it that way for a long time, and haven't lost a knife yet.:thumb up:

The only exception is, when I was in the army, I had my knife in a O.D. green nylon belt pouch made from parachute webbing. The pouch was made so that the whole knife was swallowed, and you squeezed the bottom of the pouch so the knife rose up and you grabbed it and pulled it out.

I'm not and old guy at 59. I have not lived a sheltered life. I've had crappie jobs that required night work in not so good neighborhoods. Maybe I'm just lucky but I've never needed a knife in a tactical self defense situation. Nothing against tactical knives, I got a bunch of them - Spyderco, Benchmade, CRK and others.
I still carry a Spyderco Para 2 everyday but use my Case medium stockman x10 more. Opening boxes, food prep, cutting small branches etc. Just seems like a tactical knife marketing oversell.
Anbody else?

There are "tactical knives", specifically meant for harsh "combat use" and there are "modern knives", with features which are not found in traditional patterns, such as pocket clips. modern locks, and one hand opening features.

With the possible exception of a KaBar Mark I Navy knife with stacked leather washer handle, a reproduction of a WW II knife, in my opinion, I do not own any "tactical knives". I do own and carry a fair number of "modern knives".

Whether of modern design or traditional, all of my knives are tools. I have never carried a knife for any other purpose.

I'd rather carry a capable modern knife and never need it beyond any EDC needs than desperately need a knife to save my ass and have one in my pocket woefully underqualified for the task. I can cut fruit and open mail with a 3.5" blade just as easily as I can with a small traditional folder or a SAK. On the flip side, I don't feel the same level of confidence in a small folder or a SAK in a situation where things have gone sideways and getting out alive is my primary goal (animal attack, human attack, etc.).

For me if it's about 3.5 closed or less it can drop into a pocket or pocket sheath, but any bigger and it needs a belt sheath. I think a lot of others use pocket slips or sheaths.

I wear my T-shirts untucked , but I live in a rural farm town so I don't have to worry anyways.
Have you considered leaving your shirt untucked ? Or check out the collector knives pocket sheaths/ slips, I believe they make one that clips in pocket.
If your knife has a bail or lanyard hole you could also try out a suspension clip / dangler.

A peanut in the pocket and a SAK on the belt. I suppose I just live a mundane life in that I find things just don't go "sideways to the point I need a knife with which to defend myself and get out alive. I carry another tool for that eventuality and have yet to need it.

I have typed out a reply to this thread many many times and ended up deleting them all. I've been in a knife fight once in my life. He had two, I had none. I have scars that will stay with me for life. He is looking at a very long prison sentence. There is no winner. I can see no way that the result would have been any better had I used a knife as well. And in true Gump fashion; that's all I have to say about that.

Even if you win a knife fight you will be cut up with your next stop likely the emergency room.
