I got my piece today. Thank you very much, it's really nice! The end pins are cool as a polar bear's backside... I think I will try to leave them as intact as possible.

Thanks for the buckeye, I just got it today. I can't wait to get to work on it. Here's a photo of scales cut from the block (wetted).

Got mine today too, it is beautiful and very timely as I was telling another maker about it yesterday. So I'll take this to show him today along with Burl Source contact info. Great deal!

I did up some quick RAM scales to try out this material.

I don't usually work with stabilized material, and this was my first time with buckeye. Most of my comparisons will be to rosewoods and desert ironwood.

Despite the fact that it's stabilized, the block was still pretty lightweight. It's much more dense than the styrofoam-like natural material, but it's not heavy. The tablesaw met little resistance sawing it into scales. Shaping was done on a spindle sander. This material sands quickly and precisely without much difference in grain-direction. The resin doesn't gunk up the abrasives like some of the rosewoods do. There were no problems drilling. Carving was more difficult than I expected. It wanted to tear out along grain boundaries. The solution is to use very sharp tools and shave off thin sections at a time. It finishes nicely with 3M finishing paper. It's not a super high gloss and the grain is visible on the surface, but it polishes up. It looks very natural. I then gave it a light coat of oil to bring out the color.

I'll be carrying this knife for a while to determine durability. More to come.

Great pictures guys! I met a pen maker this weekend who tried to trade me out of my block. :D No dice. But I did turn him onto Burl Source, so chalk up another potential customer. Looks like you're going to have your hands full Mark!

Thanks, I am glad you like your piece. Can't wait to see what you do with it.

Don't know if I'm too late to join in on this... Butchie told me about this great wood he got from you Mark, especially after I told him about a full tang skinner I have on the bench and that I couldn't figure out what I wanted to put on her.

Sorry for taking so long to reply but I got the slabs last week and they look like they will be fine. I'm just finishing up the folder it should be done in the next week or so I will post pictures and comments when it's complete

Thanks Tim
