RescueRiley's recent thread got me in the giving spirit, and since I didn't do a 500 post giveaway, thought I would do one in honor of 600 and RR's generosity. I don't have a lot of different things to give away, so this one will go a little differently.

Just post up here that you'd like to enter. Like Rescue, I'd like to limit the giveaway to people who contribute here at W&SS. Other than that, this one is open to everyone. I'll keep it open until the morning of Sunday, December 14th. After that, I'll throw all the names in the hat and pick one at random.

To keep it interesting, post up a pic with an outdoor theme, a tip or trick you've picked up related to wilderness and survival skills, a story you'd like to share, or something similar.

Anyway, the winner will get either a black or desert tan Rat Cutlery Izula necker. I bought one of each, so I'll flip a coin to see which one goes. These haven't shipped from Rat Cutlery yet, so might be later in the month before I can get it to the winner.

Limit one per customer please, except for RescueRiley. His name automatically goes in the hat once for every 10 guys that post up.

Thanks guys, I've learned some good stuff here, and looking forward to 600 more.

hey bor im in too. thanks alot. ive learned that a serrated blade makes uber thing and crumbly curls in wood. makes for making fuzz sticks much easier for me. might help others too.

Thanks for the chance. The best tip I've ever read here was "when in worry when in doubt, run in circles scream and shout!"
The tips I most use are Doc Canada's tip about plants. I really need more education on edible plants.

This is a pic of my twin boy's playing in the "COLD" water up in the Smokey Mountians this summer on vacation. We had stopped on the way up the mountian to stretch our legs & the boys were really wanting to wade in the creek so we let 'em :D Man that water was like Ice Water, we caught a few salamanders & skipped a few rocks & they had a Blast

I'm definitely in! The more that signup the better chance Rescue has of winning this blade!

Tip: Allow yourself at least one comfort/extra item in survival kits/packs. A candy bar, deck of cards, small book, picture, hot chocolate, picture, etc can be a big moral booster!

Awesome, I'd love to be in on this one. Attitudes like RR's are contagious, eh?

Tip: Don't wear fancy pants when buchcrafting.

I am in...sorta...I see that we need a few more posts to get rescue in the hat...so...get with it guys...

That is an awesome and generous offer Mapper. Really awesome. I'm going to decline participation - only because I will buy an Izula and really want to support the RC-team through my purchases. However, I will reaffirm that your contest offering is above and beyond generosity. Happy holidays and lets see this thread grow as fast as your post count!

I'm in!

My tip is: include a list of survival priorities and procedures in your PSK or pack. If you get into a sticky situation, it will help you think clearly and get done what you need to. (just follow the directions!)

Great giveaway...

Here's a little cautionary tale:

While hiking through the High Peaks region of New York State's Adirondack Park several summers ago, I decided to pare away some "unnecessary" gear and I left the iodine tabs at home and just brought my First Need water filter. *cue ominous sounds*

I had found some sketchy, silt laden, funky-arsed beaver pond to refill my Nalgenes along my trek and almost immediately clogged my filter lickety split. I had enough water to rehydrate some refried beans for a delicious dinner but not a drop left for an after-dinner drink.:(

Night was setting in and it was a hot, still night. Being thirsty from hiking all day, rationing my water and eating a salty dinner, I had a hard time getting to sleep. Sleep finally came and I woke up in the morning with cottonmouth worse than a college-era weed smoke-a-thon. I packed up my gear and headed down a side trail where I hoped to find a stream to gather some liquid refreshment. I found a trickle where I could fill my cooking pot and I fired up my stove to boil any intestinal-wrecking critters away. A few minutes later the water was boiling, but so was the sun.:grumpy:

I let the pot cool as much as I could and brought the water to my lips where I was treated to a hot and spicy bean water brew (no extra water to clean the pot, remember?) that did little to quench my thirst.:barf:

I learned quite a lesson in being prepared that weekend, I tell ya!:o

Congratulations on 600 posts!

Wow, this is a very generous giveaway. Thanks for the opportunity.

Here's a picture from Muskoka, Ontario:

And, just for kicks, here's a story that I posted last week on the Becker forum, regarding the durability of the BK-9:

Once, I was on a fishing trip with some friends, on one of those nameless lakes that dot northern Ontario. We stopped for a shore lunch on a rocky outcropping, near a pine forest. We did up some excellent bass with beer batter. When we were finished our fishy feast, one of my buds had a momentary lapse in judgement, and tossed the contents of the frying pan across the rocks. Long story short, the cooking oil made a path between the fire pit and the dry pine needles covering the rocks. It took only a few seconds for the fire to spread to the point where it was almost beyond our ability to stop. A few of the guys attempted a bucket brigade, but the fire pit was so far from the water that this wasn't solving the problem fast enough. I had my BK-9 with me, and I used it (nay, abused it!) as a shovel to cut / dig / gouge a fire break between the burning ground and the forest. The area is mostly glacial lakes and pine trees, so the soil is only a few inches deep. I was scraping like mad, grimacing as the edge of my knife kept hitting bare rock. Anyway, the trench worked, and we were able to concentrate on putting out the smouldering dirt without having to worry about the fire spreading. It was a harrowing experience. When our work was done, we sat around, covered in soot, and had a round of victory beers. I took the time to inspect my BK-9, fearing the worst. As it turned out, I had chipped away a bit of the finish, and slightly dulled the edge. That was it. Five minutes with a water stone, and it was good as new, albeit a bit scuffed. And that was after scraping rock.

All the best,

- Mike

This is an awesome contest, thanks.

My tip is: When bringing new people out, especially the girlfriend, be prepared to pack in a few extra items. This will make their trip much more enjoyable and wil allow you to return to the woods more frequently.

Congrats to you and thanks for the giveaway. My tip: When it's really cold out be careful using iodine to purify water, it doesn't work as well in the winter as it does in the summer. I learned the hard way via the Giardia diet plan. Also don't wait several weeks to go to the doctor, it's not a flu you can't shake. I'm only dumb on occasion. Take care: Howard

Practice with your PSK!!! Here's a picture of my son and his "pocket" fishing kit used to catch a small sun perch:thumbup:

This one I am going to enter, I really want an izula but I can't get one for a while. My tip is that tools are only as good as the person using them, you can have a $600 busse but if you can't carve a notch to save your life, you'd be better off with a can of tuna.
