#78 American Jack

This is indeed a great run. I missed a couple of SFO's I was hoping to get but maybe they'll show up later and be affordable. I've looked at the tip of the main blade on 3 of mine and they all have the funky grind on about the last 1/8" at the tip. It won't matter on the ones that I keep in the tube and I'm thinking a 17 dps sharpening will probably take care of it although I'll probably loose a bit of blade length in the process.
Enjoy your great knives everyone!
Rick

Appaloosa Bone arrived a day earlier than expected.

Over the last year or so, I've tried to scale back my new knife purchases a bit and limit myself to one, maybe two, knives from any GEC release I'm interested in. I've had a few missteps along the way (*ahem*#25's*ahem*), but for the most part, I've done a pretty good job sticking to that plan. The downside is that it sometimes feels like I have to wait a long time to get my hands on a pattern that everyone else here is already showing off. Thankfully, I got my first #78 in the mail yesterday.

The Northfield jigged bone was a good choice. I like the unique jigging/checkering (it feels really nice, too). I'm also really happy with the pull on the blade, which is a little stronger than other recent GECs (but I'm guessing a little lighter than previous #78 runs I've read about). The high-polish blade sometimes puts me off knives in the Northfield line, but it's nothing a little patina can't fix.

I also took some comparison shots with a couple other similarly-sized GEC spearpoints. I like that the shape of the #78 is sort of halfway between the straight #77 spearpoint and the... let's call it "bulbous" #85 spearpoint. :D

I just noticed the "K" on Mikes leather slip is different than my previous ones. I see the arm of the "K" is a knife:cool::thumbsup:

Paul, I'm sorry to break it to you my friend, but the knife that makes up the "K" on your CK pocket slip clearly has a thumb stud, so I'm afraid you're going to have to limit posting photos of it to the "Traditional and Modern Pairings" thread. ;) :D

Question for all of you guys with the single blade versions, can you pinch it open?

I actually found my Northfield fairly easy to pinch open. It should get even easier once there's some patina on the blade. As others have suggested, you could always add an EO notch (the ones I've seen so far look great on this pattern).

Barrett, first off, your #78 is a beauty my friend, I just rec'd that very knife. I'm about to put my own edge on it with my worksharp as soon as I pop into our store. I usually keep my worksharp in my unheated garage but at -6° I find the performance of my worksharp to be much better when it doesn't have to operate in Arctic like conditions:eek::D

I had to LOL in regards to the slip Barrett as that very thought did cross my mind:p

Just out the tube and not even wiped down yet. I am very happy with the brightness of this pattern. You never know if you will get a lackluster example. The photo was taken in bright sunlight, so it looks more subdued indoors. But it definitely looks like an Appaloosa, and I know Appaloosas!

Thanks, Paul. Is it the WorkSharp that doesn't function well in subzero temps, or the operator? :D I can't imagine my sharpening skills would be at their best at -6°.

Barrett, the cold definately affects both machine and user:eek:

My old work van resisted but fired up regardless of the balmy weather:D

A new arrival yesterday so I snapped a quick pick of my latest #78 and then put my gloves back on asap:eek:

I grabbed one of the Red Linen Micarta SFOs for two reasons: I like GEC Micarta (especially the Maroon Linen and except for the OD Green) and I wanted to compare the single blade 78 with the two blade versions that I got earlier in the run. Plus the single blade seems to get a lot more love around here than the two blade.

After carrying the single blade for a few days, I have to say...

I like the two blade a lot better.

Anyone else in the heretical minority with me?

Woodman,
From a "user" standpoint I'm with you. I can see lots of uses for that large pen blade. If I need a thin single blade for carry I have several 73's and 74's. From a collectors standpoint I believe it would probably be the other way around.
Take care,
Rick

I don’t have a single blade 78 yet, but I do have other single blades in a similar size knife. That being said, I love the 2 blade variant and after having 2 blade 77’s, I will say that I like the slightly larger size of the 78 much more.
