#78 American Jack

Leslie Tomville Leslie Tomville Sorry man, but that right there would drive me crazy! Especially knowing the run of stags are so hard to get to. Personally I would have it fixed at factory, weather it beeing through the dealer or direct. As @knifeswapper said; it should have been a "S".

On the other hand, when I first saw your post #1153 I didn't even notice so I guess it's kind of a hard decision..

@ Leslie. That is a bummer man, I'm sorry. I'm a little picky on certain stuff and less on others. I returned a stag Hawthorme because a hole was spun 2x times the size it needed to be and looked horrible to me. I think it's all up to you and what you can live with. I would try asking GEC if they can do anything else. Also TKC still has some nice 2 blades. I would probably grab a 2 blade in case I couldn't live with that one. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

353 353 thanks my friend. I have already emailed GEC, and I hope they just offer to fix it. i really think it can be smoothed out and dyed in a way that would make it disappear. Otherwise, they should be willing to discount it as a second, and I will give it a go myself. The stag just looks to good to let it go. And thanks so much for your advice Mike @knifeswapper and your for your concern Chris Shock_ Shock_ ! As Forest Gump could have said, buying knives is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get.

Not a happy camper today.
Picked up a very nice single blade #78 with the smooth white bone covers from the pre-order when they came out. Quickly became my favorite GEC. Just starting to get a nice patina from cutting food.
Fell out of my pocket yesterday, and is now long gone.
Looks like the only smooth bone covered #78s still around are the two-blades, which seem to have been met with less favor than the single blade versions. Worth replacing? I'm a sucker for smooth bone, but other than the 2 blade being a little thicker, which is not really a deal breaker for me as I have large hands, and I just don't really need 2 blades, did the 2 blade version come out any worse than the single blade #78s? I thought the workmanship on this run was just stellar, and I'd hate to get disappointed twice with a two blade that isn't up to the same fit & finish as my single blade #78.
I'm going to go back to sulking with my coffee now. :(

Sorry about the loss BBF, losing a knife/aaa light is always a bummer. I have a 2 blade ebony and it's f&f like all my 78's is exceptional. I hope theres some chance of retracing your steps that allows your 78 to be found.

What a bummer B Bigbluefish ! I can feel your pain. But I do not believe there are any quality differences at all between the one and two blade knives. Speaking for myself, it is purely a personal preference. In fact, you are lucky if it does not matter to you, or if you might actually prefer a thicker knife, because you have so many choices still available. And you have the added bonus of not having to rush. In any event, if you really want a single blade, I bet you will have a chance to get one on the exchange.

I hope you find that knife, B Bigbluefish !

USPS delivered an Ebony Jack yesterday, after a slight delay on their part. I like it very much. After owning the Cocobolo example for a few weeks, I knew that another wooden-handled single-bladed one was gonna be the right choice for me. :p

I got my final #78 today, the single blade ebony.

There is a big gap between the liner and cover on the show side towards the rear bolster. Never seen this on a GEC.
Would you guys worry about this or should I let it go?

I think I would like that fixed myself but it is a personal choice. If you choose to sell or trade at some point it does take some of the value away from the knife as you would properly declare the noticeable fault in a posting. The magnified picture may make it look worse on screen but it is there. I think the folks at GEC would happily make it right for you. Some dealers do hold some knives back initially for such circumstances as well so you could ask the seller.

If you want it as a true daily user then perhaps you can love it just the way it is.

I would not worry about that one bit. To each his own though. Your call.

Just received my first two #78s and am very impressed by this pattern. After being a little disappointed with the 35 and the 81 this pattern is a real home run for me. I really like a knife that feels solid and workmanlike in your hand and this feels just right.

Personally, as long as the cover is stable and solid I wouldn't fret over it. I'd probably fill the gap with some CA and call it good. Then again I don't really buy knives I'm not going to use. If you're collecting I guess it's a different story.

Two beauties! Very nice grain and color in the Cocobolo.

Well if all goes as planned a couple single blade Stags should be arriving today

Thanks, guys. I think I will try one of the two blade 78s with the smooth bone. If I do miraculously find the other knife, then I will just have to live with a pair of them.

I have both a single and two blade 78 in white bone because I love the material and couldn't decide. I love them both equally and glad to have both so if a miracle happens, you will likely be pleased.
