#81 Bull Moose Thread

as far as a traditional, this one has the cleanest build of my few.

On a whim I also ordered a buck large stockman with my 81. Its a literal POS. Dull, gaps every where, weak springs, blade rub. Sorely disappointed. Its one of the USA made ones too.

Hold it next to the 81 and its plainly obvious why GEC seems to be the standard for production traditionals right now.

Here is a pic of my planned modification... i already started grinding it on my belt grinder. This 10-95 is surprisingly difficult to grind. (My belt is old though) I am dipping the blade in ice water and never letting it get beyond warm to the touch. I probably should have used a dremel with a cut-off wheel, but this will be finished tonight. After the mod is done I will force a light patina with a vinegar soak. Dont judge me. I like the gray look of an old blade and I am too impatient to wait for it!!!

I love this mod. Show us when you're done!

Ordered my ebony yesterday, so I'll probably have my mod done to show on Wednesday.

Done! Friggen perfect! Its like a two blade stockman now! Im in love. When using the clip blade the index finger sits in the new gap where I removed material from the spear and the grip is more comfy now. I tried to continue the swedge as best I can. I finished it off with my 9 micron mirror polished convex edge. Bad boy is like a damn razor blade! Here are the glamour shots! Vinegar patina coming next.

Thanks! I am thinking that this is how they should have made it to begin with.

Since the ebony has the long pull and that stops further from the tip of the blade, I may turn that into more of a wharncliffe like on my dixie stockman.

Thing is, a moose is such a great buy to me. One of the few patterns, where if you are bothered by the in-hand feel of the two full blades, it is easily remedied and you just end up with two great, full-sized, right-handed single blades. Like a Black Friday special! You can't go wrong. Example:

Still haven't decided what to do with the other blade and spring from this one though.

Nice! You do that yourself?

Vinegar soak for 25 minutes a blade and then a touch up and stropping of the edge and she looks good as old!

Thinking over doing something like this to one of my own, it actually looks like a Northfield will lend itself better to a full sheepsfoot mod, given the long pull positioning. Don't have to worry about salvaging the nail nick.

NICE job with that mahergrosh 3-1-1! I've carried mine a couple a times and found it a bit too heavy. Your solution is sweet!
Looking forward to my moose in stag! I love the easy pulls and cam tangs on my calf roper. Sounds like I can expect these on this release from GEC too which is nice!
I was drawn to getting one of these for the elegance of the frame pattern. I hope I'm happy with the size and heft too.

I agree. To get the angle and look of the tip correct I had to leave a little of the curve in the last 1/4 inch of the blade. With the northfield there will be room to have a perfectly straight edge and a nice long drop to a wharncliffe point.
