Anyone seen something like this before?

I got a Contego a few weeks and haven't really used it that much and certainly not with any kind of brute force applied. When I first got it I sanded down the edges of the handle scales to my liking and put on a new edge. I really like the knife and consider getting another one "just in case" :D

However, a few days ago the knife fell from a coffee table down onto concrete. Not sure, but I think it hit with the rear/glass breaker first. Didn't notice it at first, but suddenly something was wrong with the grip. The backspacer was in two bits, sticking out, pivoting around each their handle bolt. Wooops!

Steel this thickness embedded in steel liners just don't break unless exposed to a lot of force and the color and texture of the fracture is weird. It is interesting to note though, that the fracture is at the thinnest area of the backspacer. To my eye it looks like something is wrong with the steel, like impurities, tension or some other issue. I know things like this happens once in a while and I'm not exactly cursing Benchmade ;)

I used the contact form on the Benchmade website and told them what happened. As I live in Norway shipping costs makes sending it to the US a no go. Secondly, I've voided warranty by dismantling the knife almost the second I got it and so I confessed to that in the contact form. I asked if I could buy this part and get it shipped. Keeping my fingers crossed! However it is not a major issue, the knife works just fine. It's not like the two parts wiggle/slide out with normal use - they sort of interlock and they are squeezed together by the liners. Probably the reason why they where sticking out (when I noticed it) was tension or something like that. With the naked eye the fracture is almost impossible to discern too.

Hate to hear that! I hope Benchmade will send you a new backspacer. If not, you might get some custom standoffs made.

I deal with alot of broken metal at my job and looking at the picture and how dark it is on the outer portion and lighter right in the center it looks like the metal was already broken then when it fell the center part that was holding it together snapped if that makes any sense.

Yeah, I was thinking the same. However, it is supposed to be stainless steel and that looks to be a lot of oxidizing. I saw no fracture when I disassembled it too, and I remember I examined it and liked the apparent "solidity". Could there have been a beginning hairline fracture under the coating perhaps?

A small update.

Benchmade got back to me and they are sending me a new back spacer. Good news and great customer support! :)

Once again Benchmade comes through buy making an exception to their own rules. Most other companies would blame the buyer and leave it at that. Congrats Mac!

Well, postage from the US to Norway takes a while, but I finally got the replacement backspacer a few days ago. No problems at all installing it. However...the backspacer I got was for the gray Contego, not the black one as I got. Also included was silver frame and pivot screws. When I installed these parts my poor little Contego made me think of some kind of character out of a cartoon with half a scarred face or something ;) I put the remaining black screws to the buffing wheel to pull off the paint and polish them plus doing a quick sandpaper and polish job on the clip. The result is somewhat a FrankenContego, not gray nor black in style. On the included image the backspacer looks to be much darker gray/metall than the rest of the parts, but it's got to do with the lighting and highlights. There is a difference in tonality but it is quite insignificant.

I think that backspacer looks very nice on there. Maybe better than the black. And the polished clip too. I'm jealous! My Contego is all black, but yours has some flavor.

By the way, the glass breaker broke on my Contego. Its part of the backspacer as you know. Benchmade paid for my shipping in both directions, and replaced it without issue. I should have asked for a contrasting color like yours.

Looks like a design flaw to me.

Based on what exactly? Are you experienced somehow in metalurgy to make this statement? Not trying to stir it up, but you seem so sure and I'd like to learn about these things.

No worries on calling me out on this I did sound critical of the knife.I just checked my Contego the BM forum version and it has SS standoffs.I just surmised that since the break occurs between the screws at the thinnest point, and the grainy appearance of the metal it looked like it was cast metal.Nothing wrong with cast metal but it can develop weak points especially in a situation like this. But i can't know this for sure.I do like the SS standoffs though.
I am not a metallurgist but as a machinist I have designed and made thousands of brackets, holders and widgets over the last 10 years and sometimes it pays to over-engineer parts a little bit.
Anyway I do like the knife and stuff happens this could just be a metal flaw of some kind.

Thanks ice pick, I was genuinely interested. I've seen the same grain structure on some broken fixed blades. They never seemed over hardened and it was peculiar to see the topographic patterns on the break points. I agree on the overengineering aspect, especially on structural components.

Ooops I don`t have the Benchmade 810 Contego I have the BM Rift, hence the stand offs. These two are similar looking.
I would still in hindsight make the backspacer a little beefier and not harden the steel but this is just an opinion from one who doesn't own the knife.

From the original photo I wondered if BM is using powdered metal or MIM technology to make that part, and similar parts on other BM knives. I have noted what appeared to be such parts on two Buck knives I have. A lot of S&W enthusiasts did not like it when S&W switched most revolver internal mechanism parts to MIM technology per my reading. Well before that when Colt went to PM parts there was a lot of criticism of the rougher feel of their revolver mechanisms. Enough so that it affected sales adversely in a major way I understand.

I hope to buy Contego ,little uncomfort now I see that, but I think is just a one in thousands that got factory flaw.

Hi guys, M4cr0s I've got a question.. After installing that new glass breaker did you try to use it?
