810 Contego backspacer fracture

I sent BF member Benchmade both a PM and an email regarding this issue so hopefully in time we'll hear from someone at Benchmade.

I called Benchmade's customer service and asked what it's made out of. They said it was stainless steel, whichmakes me tthinkthat yours was pprobably flawed in some form. The Contego is looking a lot better to me now.

I'd love to hear from them on this thread, as I haven't contacted them yet but definitely want a replacement backpiece/glassbreaker for my Contego.

It's made of powder steel of some sort. The backspacer can possibly have a capillary draw when presented with some chemicals.

Whether it's stain resistant or not, I'll defer to their CS rep. I got the above info from one of their designers, he actually designs their knives. I trust his word above anyone else when it comes to materials used. ;)

Had the same thing happen to me today. Snapped right at the handle screw. I removed the backspacer and it is a MIM (sintered) part for sure. I think it's a very poor material choice for such a high stress location. This should have been a chunk of machined stainless steel. And that's exactly what I'm going to do. Gonna make a solid spacer out of 304 or 316L at work.

Dang, just when I was really starting to like my Contego... :grumpy:

Why dont they use G-10 rather? That stuff is tough as nails.

I broke at least a dozen bottles, broke many ceramic coffee mugs, only damage from knocking it through glass and into concrete is a slightly scratched pocket clip. Sorry to hear of the failures.

The catalogue says stainless backspacer, maybe their oxidizing process messes with the steel? I know the backspacer on mine rusts like mad if I work in the rain and don't oil it.
