810 Contego backspacer fracture

I'm pretty tempted to pick one of these up. If i'm in a situation where I deem in necessary to break a pane of glass, its probably in a high stress situation where I care more about a life being at stake than the condition of my carry blade. But that could just be my justification. 4" blade of M4 steel? Hard not to like that.

I think part of the problem is the last screw holding the backspacer is not aligned with the glass breaker. This creates a pivot point whenever force is applied directly to the glass breaker tip, bending/flexing the backspacer. Does anyone else see that?

I agree with you mate, seen this and had the same thought
Edit: In that case I think the backspacer should be thicker. Imo jimping on its back is not necessary, it makes the backspacer weak

Wait a second, isn't that backspacer made of titanium, or am I thinking of a different knife?

As it's been mentioned I think it's a weakness in the backspacers design. Nevertheless I'm going to try Contego out on a couple of car windows next week. I'll post here and let you know how it went.

I think the pin itself is SS; but the back spacer looks to be a cast material.
Could be Ti, or something else.

Don't know if someone has mentioned it, but the backspacer is made of powder steel. That could explain why it looks odd. This came directly from a designer at Benchmade btw.

That is exactly what I was trying to articulate with the whole "J" thing and "bent nail" example. The whole impact of force translates all that stress onto a very weak point. Which this problem is starting to seem like its the rule more than the exception with this knife.

Yesterday I did some glass breaking, standard non tempered glass about 3-4 milimeters thick and some beer bottles. The breaker did ok had also tempered glass 5 milimeters thick however didn't try it. I suppose backspacer wouldn't survive that

I have yet to try the glass breaker on my Contego. It does seem like a flaw which I'm sure Benchmade will address with either a redesign and/or better steel for the backspacer.

As always, it's great to hear of their prompt sending out the replacement part at no charge.

The Contego is a remarkable cutting machine with a 4" blade of CPM-M4 and a street price of $135 brand new.

I agree with you. Redesign or better steel would be very nice

I've not used my glass breakers yet. But it would be nice to have a couple extra updated ones. (one for each knife) in case mine let go someday.

Of all the Benchmades I'd love to see an "ultimate" Contego with, for example, CF handles and titanium backspacer. Shoot two birds with one stone.

Forum knife! Probably wouldn't even be that hard (on their end, I know how hard it was to get the Rift made)!

This thread is a little disappointing as I just received a Contego in a trade. Very surprised to see the back spacer fracture like that. Knife feels like a tank in hand. Hope the fine people at Benchmade see this and maybe take a look at making a change.

Im surprised someone from Benchmade hasn't come on here and commented on what they were going to be doing about this issue.
