And so--- thats why my folders started seeing kitchen duty, Getting married and moving into a smaller apartment that doesn't have the large front and back yard you were used to does downsize the knife use.
inevitably ill have to downsize the numbers as well. One of the first things I sold when I moved was my large Granfors Bruks that would be benched

Most of us will have a "knives out" wheel when we die, most of the surviving family members wont know what they are, how much they are, much less what to do with them, which if you think about it is a bit disheartening. There was a maker who put a lot of thought, effort, and arguably, physically arduous effort into that one piece that will go for a lot of money, and may even be a great workhorse; but most will never know that--- because they didnt spend that much to cut into wood, bone and grit.
It will either be sold for pennies on the kept simply because its pretty, knowledge of it lost to time. To stop a rant from becoming an epic...

I inherited 11 of my dad's guns, I concur, cant just slap a price tag on em... its sad
Same. I sold most of them and bought a few contemporary models and customized them with the money. I kept two or three that I have memories attached to (and his service pistol). I get more enjoyment from the users than a collection sitting in my safe that I wouldn’t use for practical reasons.

Collections should evolve through the generations of ownership IMHO, and they’d be happy you share the enthusiasm for the hobby more than keeping things as a momento.

Like the old houses of UK where there is an old collection of paintings, swords, etc that survived inheritance after inheritance. In reality a single butter knife will outlive the original purchaser

Educate them. My wife and son know my collections - knives, guns, coins and bullion -are worth a considerable amount yet either will not want to keep many of them. Make an inventory w/ dollar values for reference. My wife knows to hire an estate sale company that specializes in collections like I have.

My knives are worth way more than my guns.
Mine too ... 10 to 1.
