9mm

Just a last side note to the OP. I noticed what you suggested for yourself in pistols and I'm not sure if you're like me, but I basically prefer grips with beavertails. When I pick up a 92 or CZ my hand automatically chokes up into a high and tight position, allows for better everything for me without having to think.

That said just as an additional option, not sure what your uses are but if you are looking for a striker design, Glocks also have a beavertail backstrap option. I know that I said I would never own one but there's a reason why they are so popular. If things went downhill quick I probably wished I had a Glock with me as there's nothing to the design to prevent you from squeezing the trigger when you need to.

Wow guys! I was away all weekend and just now got back to a computer.... I should have checked this thread sooner. so much reading!!! ha ha ha. thanks for all the input everyone im gonna have to go back and read through this thread again to make sure I get everything. from the looks of it though there is no clear winner I guess ill just have to buy one of everything mentioned!!

As much as I like the CZ-75, I feel constrained to point out that one option not yet mentioned would be a Smith & Wesson 3rd Generation pistol. The 3913, 6906, and 5906 are all outstanding pistols, with as much reliability as anything yet nominated. The first two are shorties for concealed carry, but the 6906 is a double stack (12 rounds) so it holds 50% more ammo than the 3913 (8 rounds). The 5906 is a full-sized service weapon with a 15 round magazine. They aren't still in mass production and so are not easy to sniff out. But if you choose one, but you won't ever regret it.

Just picked up a 9mm HK USP. I will bring it to the shop so you can play with it. Probably bigger frame than what you are looking for but hey, its an excuse to shoot right?

You aren't a real gun nut until you have a 9mm Hi-Power. Sweetest ergonomics in the gun world.
I agree with Mike on the ergonomics of the Browning Hi-Power - it is the best feeling high-capacity pistol I have ever held! Ergonomics will vary depending on the size and shape of a person's hand, so handle any model you are considering, and fire them if possible.

For the mini size, I recommend the Kahr models MK9, PM9 or CM9. The MK9 has a steel frame, and the PM9 & CM9 have a polymer frame. Here is a quote from the Kahr web site on the differences between the PM9 & CM9:

"Differences between the CM models and PM models are the CM9093 has a conventional rifled barrel instead of the match grade polygonal barrel on Kahr's PM series; the CM slide stop lever is MIM (metal-injection-molded) instead of machined; the CM series slide has fewer machining operations and uses simple roll marking instead of engraved markings and finally the CM series are shipped with one magazine instead of two magazines."

The CM9 is about $200 less than the PM9.

I also agree with MikeH. My Browning High Power is my favorite 9mm and the one handgun that I won't sell. I had an H&K USP Compact that I sold a couple of years ago. I still regret that deal. If I were to buy another 9mm, It would probably be the H&K P30. Since reading this thread, I'm also interested in the CZs. I've had 3 Glocks. I keep trying to like them, but I sold all 3.

Beef- Your hands are bigger than mine so here is my experience. Hi-Power bites me due to lack of beavertail. Glock actually shaves skin off my hand because my grip is so high and I have to clean blood out of the inside of the gun after 100 rounds. I do not like the old Smith and Wessons (like the 4906) at all and have seen a lot of them break although admittedly I don't have a lot of experience with it in 9mm. I like Sigs a lot but they are heavy and many do not like their double action/ single action trigger. I now prefer S&W M&P full size, compact, and the new Shield. For pocket carry I have been carrying a Kahr PM9 ever since Ohio got CCW. It is smaller in length and height than even a S&W snub nose. I have fired the little Sig .380 and didn't like having a safety so I doubt I would like the 9mm pocket sig either. Good luck

I bought a CZ 75 P-07 Duty in 9mm a couple months ago and really like it. Far superior to the Walther PPQ that I had.

P-07 Duty's are AWESOME for the money, great ergonomics and trigger. Only I'd mention that the .40 S&W version has not been as rock solid as the 9mm version, however this is pretty typical of CZ as they design for the 9mm first and the .40 S&W as an afterthought.

The P-09 Duty (Full Size) is now available as well, it should also prove to be an excellent value.

Beef,
Your a big guy. You may be able to get away with carrying a larger gun. You could always try a Glock 19.

Hard to argue with a Glock 19 or 17.

S&W M&Ps are hard to beat.

Can't go wrong with about any HK.

The three above do really well in competitions... meaning very reliable.

Browning Hi Power would be a cool choice.

CZs run well, but I don't like the tall dust cover (makes for a short slide and harder to clear a jam).

I like the smaller Kahr 9mms, but you can't limp wrist them.

To jump in the caliber wars: With exception to the magnum calibers and rounds loaded up like a Hot .45 Colt, the bigger the better, but the improvement is only slight. Shot placement and adequate penetration are way way more important. Smaller calibers like 9mm offer more capacity along with lighter recoil allowing for faster follow ups..... it's hard to beat that. You can keep a .380 ACP though (not enough penetration).

Round for round, I'll take .45 ACP as bigger bullets cause quicker bleed out and it's more forgiving when talking hollow points that don't expand..... Still, as far as the total package, 9mm is probably the best option.
