A 2016 Forum Knife. An apology, and The Crossroads!

I'm definitely in the stainless camp! I mean lets get real, if they would of had stainless back in the day, there wouldn't be any carbon steel knives!

A fair if somewhat harsh point.:)

But in the same sense that I can't affored a carbon fibre mountain bike so I ride an alloy frame- Cost.
I'm only guessing but Stainless was probably quite exy compared to carbon steel when it first entered the market.

The early stainless was junk!

You have a lot of experience of it do you? I have knives from the 1920's and 30's with stainless blades, and the steel is good.

My personal preference is for carbon-steel, not least because we had a stainless knife last year.

While I can't say I would prefer carbon, I do hope that there will be more forum knives in future years. And if there are future knives, I hope that some of the patterns will be ones I will want to take camping or boating, and for those hopeful knives I want to be able to say "hey there's lots of carbon forum knives, let's make this one stainless."

So in the hopes that there will be a future with traditional forum knives for me that might include scout knives and rope knives, I am leaning toward carbon. Heck who knows, maybe it'll end up liking it.

i imagine we'll get to vote, so let's not get too worked up here folks. knife is likely to cut either way( isn't there an old saying about a knife cuttin' two ways?:) ). the pins or lack of them and the bar shield are what we really should be expending energy on. if people would simply agree that i'm right about these cosmetic choices, then life would be simpler;)
thanks, Neal

stainless, just put in stainless. i have patinated knives already that i love. it would also seem uncommon to simply produce a stainless hj, unless someone's made them of whom i'm unaware(always possible! probably inevitable.). i will buy either way of course:).
thanks, Neal

My first SFO HJ, a large teardrop made by Bill at Queen, was stainless!
2005 or 2006 as I recall.

Charlie was this first HJ you speak of one that had a double grooved awl? I saw one recently that looked like a 85 with an awl that had two grooves. A very classy looking knife.

actually Charlie, if i can call you that, i think i may recently have run across one of those old ones-maybe. were they available in stag? if not it was another large frame queen. if that isn't an example i wouldn't know where to start looking( 'nor in all reality be able to afford one just now-trying to save up for a couple new knives coming out:) ). i believe i've only seen one or so pics of that fancy bird, so if anyone would be willing to put up pics i'd sure appreciate it.
thanks, Neal

actually i just checked and it's listed as schatt & morgan, federal shield, and in d2 steel,so i'm guessing its not the one i thought it was. :foot:
thanks, Neal

Harness Jack number 1 (borrowed picture - I think from Knowtracks!)

Beside the jigged bone examples, nearly 400 divided into four colors, there were one each of these;

There was only one Stag - the third one down!!
HJ 1 was 3 3/4" long, and stainless, and made by Bill when he was at Queen!

HJ 5 was this one:

Carbon steel, made at GEC by Bill of course! 3 5/8" long.

Charlie, that's the exact knife I was thinking of. That double grooved awl looks great.

thanks SupraT! lotsa photos weren't there anymore, but there were more than enough to look at and give me a visual of that first hj from queen. it however is doing nothing good for my wallet-i keep squeezing it but nothing more comes out;). i don't know what i'm going to do with the hjs and the texas camp/cattle knives coming out. not too many raises for stay at home dads :) . it makes me wonder about the schatt & morgan hj i viewed as it doesn't seem to be in that post but seems to maybe follow the timelines, especially because of it's use of d2.
thanks, Neal
post script-it's labelled as a large cattleman, but it doesn't quite look like the #49f. it has a clip blade and punch on the same end. if someone knows more enlighten me, please.

Those HJs look great Charlie

Course they look better with the blades at one end! :D ;)

Here are 3 of the HJ 1's designed by Charlie Campagna and made by Bill when he was at Queen. These are 1 of 1 made only and are in rare Fossil, Stag and Pearl ........

that^^^^ is some amazing quality pearl. i'm sorry but most of what you see nowadays isn't that opalescent and rich in depth. nice size too. they almost look like computer generated images-too perfect.(i know they're not, but seriously). i was handling my s & m (heh heh), and i noticed how prominent the ends of the blades were when closed. almost too prominent; i can feel them in my pocket at times. i am sure a lot of you use slips, which makes sense to me if you are carrying a custom, but otherwise i feel like they kinda get in the way of me using that particular knife. that is, if it's in a slip case i just don't use it as much. i'm on a kick to make sure to use what i carry, or i tend to load myself up with things to fondle and play with(that really doesn't sound right). any how this kinda gets me back around to my point(real slowly), is there any way too keep the end lower? that way i don't have to debate about filing down the kick or not.(guy writing this talks alot, eh?:0 ).:D
thanks, Neal
