A Bounty of Borry, a Cornucopia of Compare

I meant when used to slash citrus off of the tree :p!

I trained my students [when I did such a thing] with white T-shirts and those large mark-a-lots used for bingo with that very technique that you must use to serve up those lovely Grapefruit you grow over there. ~waiting for the YouTube video [emoji41]

Sarah,
Not done yet! There's another package heading your way today so don't pack anything up yet. :)

All,
I love seeing reviews in general and never thought this would raise so much discussion. In light of Sarah's excellent level of review capability and just to help the community here, I'm sending a few more to her. I hope everyone is enjoying this and I hope it helps ... That in itself gives me joy and is payment for me.

Everyone has different preferences and opinions and comparing those too are fun as well.

Thanks Everyone!
Jerry

Jerry,

We'll all send our payments to your Paypal address for the various blades we are claiming. And we'll take care of postage with Sarah.

Oh did I misunderstand? I thought you were letting all these go! Hahahahahahahahaha!

Dude, the Earth hasn't done one full rotation around the sun since you started buying these knives. What the hell!

Fastest internet on the planet. Thanks for your help last Friday.

Yes, just a sliiiiiight misinterpretation there. :) Although, if anyone on here (who is a recognizable / trusted regular) I'd be open to loaning knives to them as well. I've loaned to others, I've had others loan to me, I've most often had loan offers declined.

No problem on the help. How many are we supposed to do in a rotation?? Is there a limit?

Is it something like this??

HAHAHAHAHA! Best! Graphic. Ever!

Must print this out as a poster. OMG. I'm going to be laughing at this for weeks. Or...until I buy another knife. Oh wait...that just happened!

Good thread...

That was very nice of Jerry to send along all those knives!

@pertinux:

I think I know what you mean when you describe a knife handle as being somewhat "closed vs. open" I find the bottom length measurement of a handle pattern to be an important spec. or factor towards how I perceive the overall feel of a particular handle design.

I like the Handyman because it has just enough length for my hands for a comfortable four finger grip. You should also take a look at Andy's EDC II/Lonestar patterns they share the same/similar handle design but with different shaped blade styles (Leaf vs. Clipped). I find the rounded butt end design can tuck into the heel/palm area of my hand for certain grips like you mentioned/photo'd with your Stubbymuk.

I also like the Sylvrfalcen for a smaller 3-1/2 to 3-3/4 finger design. You should also look at the Minimuk which shares the same/similar handle design as the Sylvrfalcen and is the next size up from the Stubbymuk.

Minimuk:

As a big fan of the Bushboot, I now have to try out an OK&T Mamushi.
There ya go. If you'd like to me to try to highlight a particular angle or comparison of certain aspects of the Mamushi while it's here, ask away-- though I think it's becoming clearer all the time that the knife is better served-- and perhaps explained-- in the hands of one who intuits its purposes and embraces its uses.

Speaking of which:

Speaking of which, the OK&T Knives (here, again, with the FF Bushboot):

FF Bushboot, OK&T Mamushi in black canvas, Warthog in canvas and translucent Jade, Trailhand in carbon fiber

The gray/black knives, in particular, are 'other' than what's familiar to me, or (honestly) to what I'm drawn to. To my eyes and hand, they are purpose-designed for considerations that are outside of my wheelhouse, plus being a lil' bit droopy. :o These aren't knives for me, and that's okay! :)

The secret behind the bushboot and mamushi is that the curvature gives leverage and increased power when used to slash in a reverse grip.
Had a few minutes at a PC. Here are two Ferox threads. The Combatives was the one I was thinking of and the other one is cool too ... for citrus fruits and such. ;)

Combatives

Talonized Ferox

From the review linked in that first thread:
In over a decade of blogging and sharing my thoughts on forums, I have not done very many knife reviews. The ones that I have done have been for utility and Bushcrafting knives. The biggest reason for this is that seldom do I see a knife, especially a fixed blade, that fits my requirements as a fighter. To me the definition of a fighting knife is this-

A knife primarily designed to cut, stab, slash, and smash a human being to cause trauma in order to stop them from continuing aggressive behavior.

The design should take into consideration both natural and trained movements of the body, both on the end of the defender and the attacker. The knife and handle should be free of sharp angles without purpose or any feature solely defined as aesthetic. The knife should be intuitive and not rely on "special" training to use.

(I cannot envision an outcome for me, successful or less so, in which my prized custom knife isn't confiscated as, let's see, "evidence.")

Let's go back to, "not in my wheelhouse," etc. :D

Thanks for the links and information, all.

Perhaps in your fine report the martial aspect of a blade as a weapon was overshadowed by your generous, astute, and well focused attention to the utility and functionality of a knife as a tool. Us being guys, [insert humorous grin here] likely still carry that DNA, for better or worse, that allows most of us to generally see things [ loose term] as weapons first, tools second.

Thank you for your kind words.

As to the latter, some knives are still meant as weapons first, tools second-- which I deeply respect, and for which I am grateful.

But yes, to the former-- Tools. And Morale-Boosters! Here I am, with papers, string, basswood, various füd, and some random brush out back, and these incredible knives. I am thoroughly enjoying this Explore, but my imagination is limited, my days constrained. If my words help others appreciate the crafters' handiwork, near and far, all the better.

Good thread...

Golly Dog, yes. I'm still overwhelmed.

@pertinux:

I think I know what you mean when you describe a knife handle as being somewhat "closed vs. open" I find the bottom length measurement of a handle pattern to be an important spec. or factor towards how I perceive the overall feel of a particular handle design.

This makes much more sense to me than it would have a few months ago.

I marvel often, and again in the midst of this, that I chose as well as I did in bringing in my Patch knife first. Its handle contours and length are holding up as a standard of comfort-in-use. I don't think I'm alone in wanting a knife's handle to fit well in ways I didn't know possible, vs. 'telling' my hand, "It's a good fit. Get used to it."

(Turns out, I don't like my handles telling me anything, all bossy-like.)

I like the feel of the Handyman very much, although Jerry's is a little rounder/fatter than I would ultimately prefer.

Also, and this is going to sound like at my most shallow, in this realm of discretionary spending and (for me) luxury knives, a pattern has to work visually as much as in practical (if limited!) utility. The Handyman's lines don't quite do it for me-- I like it very, very well, but it's sorta missing the Oooh, La somehow.

I'm intrigued by the EDC (and EDCII) and Lonestar; their handles strike me as some that most definitely have to be experienced in person. I'm not yet decided on their relatively bottom-heavy look; comfort in-hand could push me over into one.

I also like the Sylvrfalcen for a smaller 3-1/2 to 3-3/4 finger design. You should also look at the Minimuk which shares the same/similar handle design as the Sylvrfalcen and is the next size up from the Stubbymuk.

As expressed earlier, I want the right Sylvrfalcen veryveryvery much. I sorta just relaxed a few of my criteria on another knife (more below), but know I would regret doing so with the Sylvrfalcen. I will wait as along as it takes for the right combination of attributes to appear and move me, hope to be in place (or garnered enough good will?) to make it mine if so, then hold it and love it and use forever and ever, amen. Swashbucklin'.

I have looked often at the Minimuks, and at the one you've pictured in particular:

Thanks to Jerry, I now have a better understanding of the desirability of a thicker blade (with a tapered tang), which brings this particular model back into stronger consideration at some point in time.

Handyman with EDC II and Lonestar:

"Handymen" next to a Marttiini Curly Birch Carbinox with "Lynx" style handle (which I find to be very comfortable in the hand):

Thank you so much for these pictures, and for your impressions of the knives. :)

Sarah,
Not done yet!

Holy smokes, Jerry.

Um, wow.

I can hardly believe this, and can't thank you enough. I feel like I'm just playing at this(!); I'm glad if any of my thoughts or genuine affection for the handiwork (and what the lot o' you create here, together) is at all beneficial.

Annnnddddd..... In light of More on the way (some or all of which I have reason to hope begin with "B" and end with "-ushfinger"?), I decided that we needed a Bear Cub in the mix, pronto. :o

It doesn't sport any blue, but it also doesn't try to slip in any pesky lime or somesuch :p, it's 1/8" TT housed in stunning ironwood with classic appointments, and, well, Robert best get shipping.

We have knives to compare.

C'mon, Friday.

Except, what's this, Jerry's next Box o' Bounty will be here tomorrow. I don't deserve this, but I sure am enjoying the ride!

In the midst of another busy week with too little knife light at the beginning and end of each work day, my thoughts keep returning to the OS Karda and WAS Bobcat, respectively:

IMG_0237.jpg~original

Were I not so determined to keep my Stuff streamlined, one or both patterns might likely wheedle their way in; I admire their elegance and balance, in view and in hand, even if skeenier than I prefer. The Surls would probably get the nod for the very feature my persnickety pinky fusses about, the way the deeper curve at the end of the handle looks.

I hope to take some pictures of these two knives in direct comparison over the week end.

It's not as bad as I feared, given that my general guideline is, "If you have to look something up on Urban Dictionary to know what it means, you'll wish you hadn't looked it up on Urban Dictionary." ;)

Nbracket has it right...
I think it means something borrowed but that online definition is pretty funny.

... on both counts. :D

~ P.

@ Vance, no offense taken either way... I bout fell out laughing my self.
@ NBracket, thanks for clearing that up good sir.

I'm from the South, here its bar a
" hey let me bar a that knife"
"Hell nah, get your own fiddleback an stop wearing lace panties."

@Pert, Urban dictionary is my first stop for definitions, but I do love the used in a sentance. It's genreally pretty laugh inducing.

Sarah, awesome post/review! VERY well done!!!

Isn't that blue Handyman that you said was Sweet Gum, instead an epoxy and pine cone handle?

...
Speaking of blue handles, this is some of the most beautiful handle material I've seen:

BTW, sorry for showing you the door to this rabbit hole Sarah. :o You're welcome! :p :D
