Will Canal Street do a knife sans shield? Seems that is the major obstacle to the brand.

I suppose it could be just me but in a forum knife I want 3 things, it has to be usable, it needs to be good quality, and it needs to be different. I, and I suspect many here, own stockman patterns...I know I have half a dozen but how many have a swell center jack? Same thing can be said of some of the patterns from GEC, most don't own a teardrop pattern for example. When I pull out my forum knife I want people to ask...not just see another pretty stockman. Just my thoughts...

My vote would be for the Swell Center Jack. I like the unique shape and have been waiting for CSC to put it out, but I am concerned about these quality issues I've been reading. The shield, while not the ideal one for me, wouldn't be a showstopper for me getting one.

it's the swell center(coke bottle?) 2 bladed jack. LAst i looked at CS their prices seemed a bit higher than the other two, and the number of patterns was less.
As far aas the coin shield i kind of like it for a couple reasons
A) it's unique
B) it's brass (i hope) and would over time wear and patina and might look even better.

Still pulling for ebony on the scales but hey bone is nice too:D

PS just checked their site and the selection under a hundred to start is even smaller and doesnt include the coke bottle.

Dont go by their MSRP! they dont make sense....
Their MSRP for the cannitler is 125 but a else where online from good places it is 75
And 75 is still retail!

Canal Street seems to make some very nice knives, and I have been tempted to try one. I like the serpentine jack that was pictured. The sheild is a no go to me, its ugly. Also I dont like the looks of the extended bolsters, they look out of proportion and take away from the handle material.

Long bolsters, like the threaded look, but yes too long. I see some congress patterns like that sometimes.

Picture the Swell Center with Ebony/Blackwood scales and a different shield.

Canal street did a nice job with the 2006 knife.

The A2 steel develops a nice patina and YES, the shield is also developing a nice darker patina. Mne is my EDC knife and I carry it in an AG russell slip.

I like the swell center but I like the serpentine jack better myself.

swell center, half trapper, or half congress. haven't heard good things about their springs. As far as their steel choices would have to go w/ the 14-4 CrMo. I like the idea of helping the phoenix out of the ashes that was Schrade. Especially since that area of my home state hasn't recovered from when they went out of business.

I really like that swell center jack, and from the AAPK forum knife I'd say we can get a different shield. I'm not too thrilled by the round CS shield either, but it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me.

On another forum I visit (AAPK) I was able to get in on their 2009 Forum knife.
They went with a Canal Street Serpentine stockman which I really like....
Custom AAPK nickel silver shield
18 percent nickel silver extended bolsters
Exclusive AAPK Ltd edition
So it seems that Canal Street can do some customizing if necessary.

That is much more attractive without the garish round logo shield. But does the cutting edge of the sheepfoot blade even when closed actually stand proud of the liners with a big gap as it appears to in all the pics?

I am happy with it, and the springs are pretty decent on mine. I'd give a 6 out of 10 on the pull and snap.

(These are not my pictures, they are from the original posters at the other place)

That's amazing.

Berkley, a lot of Stockman knives have the same blade positions. You normally open only one blade, and the sheepfoot is hidden by the other closed blade.

Charlie, you've forgotten more about knives than any ten of us can ever hope to know. I do have a few ingrained prejudices, though, and that is one of them. I've carried stockmans since my dad gave me his late-40s vintage Schrade Walden when he bought a new Buck 303 in the late 60's. Of the half-dozen or so I rotate as daily users, the only one I've encountered like that was a new Case yellow handle I bought last year. I was able to carefully file down the kick on it to eliminate what to me is an unacceptable safety risk to my fingertips when holding the knife with the master blade open. The gap wasn't anything like this large, though. Sorry, but when I close a blade on a folder, I like it to be closed all the way.
[Edited to add: Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread:o. Back to discussion of Canal Street choices for the Forum Knife.]

I couldn't agree with this more. Very well said.

That swell center looks very nice. It would be even better if they are willing to use A2 like the previous forum knife.

High riding sheepsfoot blade was common on Schrade stockman. It was not always exposing the blade like that one, but it appears the design carried over.

It's a heck of a lot easier to grind off the kick if you don't like it that way than it is to build up the kick if you don't like the blade sunk farther. I've adjusted a bunch of them to suit me. If I didn't have thumbnails, I might like that sheepsfoot sitting high enough to pinch open.

I don't fancy them, springs have been far too soft for my taste. Limited range of bone it seems, mainly stainless. Not as many variants as Queen or GEC.

Many people do speak well of them though.

I have this muskrat in 14-4CrMo, I got it for EDC/critter skinning. When I received it, It was WAY to nice and pritty. The only thing I don't like, is the blade snap, basically none. I would not be afraid to carrie it, just wish it had more blade snap to it. It has less then the Queen I have, and have been told that it is normal.

I hate weak springs in a slipjoint. They need good walk and talk.

Proud blades are a big no-no for me no matter if it is 'the style' or not.
