Swell center IS good Carry on my friend from the FAR NORTH!!!!!:D:p

Remember you are trying to herd cats!!!! and I'm thinkin you have a he-- of a hard job.;)

You can please SOME of the people SOME of the time BUT you can't please ALL the people all the time!!!:foot:

I like that newer design a whole lot better than the earlier version. That's a nice lookin' knife!

Gotta admit I'm a little concerned about the pocketability too though, 4 1/8" and a fairly hefty looking design. That's a handful, er... pockerfull there.

The second Swell Center posted really is beautiful. Will it be possible to have a different shield on the forum knife? The round CS shield is UGLY and detracts from the beauty of the knife.

Here in regular-size type;:D!!
I'll wait until Monday to close this thread. Please get your comments in. Read the whole thread before you post if you don't mind!!
If there are no serious contenders besides the Jigged Bone, different shielded, Swell Center, in D-2, I will start the next phase, of pinning down the 3 Cutleries to a firm price, then we can do the final poll!

I'm still having fun, and hope you are too!!

Not trying to beat a dead horse, but if a different shield would increase the cost, that knife would be quite handsome without a shield.

This thread went from unsatisfactory things like weak springs and ugly shield, along with choice of steel and build quality. When everyone saw the proto knife, myself included, it was pure traditional pleasure. the only Canal st. I own is the half moon trapper. It is made well with A+ scales, but it's a gents knife because of a weak spring. The stainless liners look ok, but I would prefer a more traditional liner like NS. I really like the SC on the other thread, the Queen made one. The bolsters on the Canal St. stockman look too long, but not outragious. I really like the squared Dr. looking bolster in the back of the CS sc, but how would it feel in a pair of jeans?
Charlie, is the next poll going to be between the makers and their patterns?

Substantial "snap" is a requirement our knife, whatever it is, IMO.
A different shield, if simple, will not cost more. I am hoping a BF tang stamp will be in the offing for all three choices, and finally, the final poll will be a choice from three knives, one from each cutlery.

I own many knives from GEC, Canal Street and Queen. I'd rate them in that order from the standpoint of fit and finish. I have 23 Canal Street Half Moon Trappers with different handle material. They ARE beautiful knives but a bit weak in the snap. I bought some knives from Queen and there were problems with back spring gap and blade wobble. There were some problems with the AAPK knife from Canal Street but they were good about fixing them.I have over 125 different GEC knives and there are no problems with any of them. I think anything they make other than the clunky 23 and 73 models would be fine. The problems with clubs is the same as churches, too many people! You'll never satisfy everyone.

Sincerely,

Don Franklin

There were some problems with the AAPK knife from Canal Street but they were good about fixing them.

Me, too. I was surprised as I thought the short run made specifically for knife users/collectors would be fine specimens.

The fit and finish was fair. The springs stood quite proud of the handle when open on one side with two blades, an then were nice and flush on the other. The knife was a kind of stockman model, and the outer small blade caught in the nail nick of one of the inner blades when I opened it.

There was some separation at the springs and liners, and the knife wasn't sharp. One of the blades wansn't fully buffed out.

Overall, again considering this was made for knife guys, I was quite surprised.

I sent it back. I might have been able to live with one or two of those things, but not all.

On the good side, the pull on all blades was about the same, and was quite nice. And wow... what a pretty knife. It was unusual in its design (big thumbs up for originality), and the choice of materials (all stainless)was great and I loved the fact that the blades were 440C. That meant I could actually carry it in my sweaty pocket.

As for the forum knife here, I am not up for buying a knife or ready to think that I might be buying one to return to a company do their own quality control. One issue or a couple of minor ones, one understands. But I don't understand a knife that is poorly assembled or fitted that is brand new in the box from a reputable maker. And not to beat the horse some more, especially not a knife made for knife guys.

I was VERY lucky to have purchased the knife at AAPK, and Bryan Sanders (owner of the site, and knife dealer as well) is a first rate guy and vendor. When I explained to him what was wrong with the knife, he told me I could send it back to him or send it to Canal St. Since I couldn't see how they could fix poorly fit springs on a folder, I reluctantly sent it back.

BTW, Bryan gets a huge  from me for customer service. He responded fast, and was ready to make thing right.

I have been biting my tongue on this issue, but I do hope that if Canal Street is chosen it is done with some caveats with them as to what is expected. Hopefully, all I got was a lemon, not a sign of erratic manufacturing quality.

Robert
