A cheap easy modifcation.

If etched first, there is a bluing that will work. Its not a cold blue, but requires 212 degree solution and a stay in a 275 degree oven. This isn't enough heat to mess with the temper because of the short heat times. I can't remember the name of it, but I used it last year on a Storm II. It turned out pretty nice. If I run across the stuff, I'll post up the name. Its gotta be around here somewhere...

Hmmmm, I'm very interested in doing this. The shiny clip has always bothered me a lot because I have an otherwise all-black RAM.

Hey hwpaintballer, I'm not real fond of shiny clips and will definately try out this "lighter method" to make the clip darker. Can you tell me just how many times you used the lighter before it got dark???

BTW, thanks for sharing the information. Take Good Care and Be Safe Always.

God Bless :)

Here's a link for a product Caswell sells that is supposed to blacken stainless at room temp.

http://www.caswellplating.com/kits/black.htm#stainless

A little too expensive compared to HWPB's original idea.

I'd bet upon inspection you'd find its selenium dioxide, lye and water in equal parts. Cheaper if you buy the ingredients and mix your own. But do it in a well ventilated area, preferably outside, and wear a respirator.

I probably did it 5 or 6 times, the first couple of times I only held it over the lighter for a couple of seconds just to see what would happen, after that I held it over the lighter for around 20 seconds. Also if you are going to do this becareful not to touch the clip until after it cools down for a little bit.

Thanks for the tutorial paintballer. (hw means homework?)
I have heard of this being done before, I just forgot about it and didn't really want to try it on my knives.

I'm not that particular about the clip color. I thought if cheap cold blue worked I'd give it a try. Plus, an excuse to visit Wildsports.

hw = Houston Wyatt, my intials are DHW, but I just go by my middle name.

And before anyone asks, yes I do get a lot of " Houston, we have a problem"

Is there any reason that this mod would not also work on my Skyline clip?

here's an old thread about etching stainless with naval jelly
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=4599809

I've tried it on a benchmade clip I stripped the paint off of, and it works OK. It leaves more of a beadblast/grey texture.

PG5768, I'd like to hear about your results with the super blue.

SaMX, the Super Blue didn't do anything to the stainless clip I tried it on. Haven't tried it on any carbon steel else yet, though.

OK Knifebros ... How'd I Do??? Used hwpaintballer's method :D. Take Good Care and Be Safe Always.
