A couple of walking on egg shell questions !!!

Interesting questions/challenge. I don't have any Fallkniven, because I prefer carbon steel blades. As far as BRKT when I reach for something for hard use I usually grab something with a grippier handle, and Barkies look great, but are smooth (generally). Maybe others who use their knives hard are in the same boat.

I should probably just get some sandpaper and rough up the micarta on my BRKT, but haven't brought myself to do it yet.

BRKT finishes their handles their micarta handles with a wax based compound. Wash the handle in warm water and a mild dishwashing detergent (like dove or whatever) and the wax is removed. This exposed the fabric threads, which gives a slightly grippier feel to the micarta, especially when wet.

Maybe the Fallkniven and BRKT owners are too busy using their knives to stop and take pictures of them.

Here is one example of a Bark River in action on another forum.

Here is another example.

Mike has gone to 1095 instead of A2 or some other steels on some of his larger knives in an attempt to keep prices reasonable. I don't think that is a concern of , say, Busse or Chris Reeves, among others - and that's not a slam on them, it's just not the market Mike is aiming at.

My Golok looks pretty bad right now, from a recent camping trip, as does my Clax - but I can't find my camera! If I can find it, I'll get you some pics of a couple ugly Barkies!

I've had both and used both hard. Fallkniven F1, and several barkies. They're good knives.

I'm still "Fallkniven-less."

However, I've had several Barkies ... still have a Fox River and a Golok.

I'm trying to recall the 'old' Barkie I sent off to CA friends ... I think it was an old Bravo?? I beat the heck out of that knife, really ruined that pretty Barkie shine. The knife performed just fine. It did require dedicated sharpeniing to stay razorlike, as I recall, but that's not hard.

The old Barkie never had any trouble with banging and smacking and dinging, however. Of course, the blade was somewhat short (less than 5") so I didn't abuse it the way I do my real choppers (blades of 7+").

If I can find any pics of my old, abused Barkie, I'll put them up.

The main issue may be that 1) the Barkies are very 'pretty' (shiny and well-made, often with beautiful handles, and 2) they're usually fairly short blades (so they're not your first choice when it's time to chop a trunk in two). Just my thoughts.

That would be great if you find them, thanks !

One consideration that has to be made is the finish of the knives in quetion. Satin finishes will show less wear than those knives painted black. The more refined the finish, the more easily the knife will cut.

And here is my own observation. Where are all the Busse/Rat/Scrap Yard owners/users at all the gatherings we hold? I only saw a couple Busse knives in some collections at the CT gathering back in April. I did see a lot of BRKT's and Falknivens. I'm not going to start a flame war here but where are they? PEACE, WAR, PWYP, CT Gathering, etc. etc. I can't find them.

Also, there aren't any hockey masks at the gatherings either.

Thanks for the pics bro, you can tell they are well used !!!;)

As regards the gatherings, all I can say is I'd be there like a shot if I lived closer !!!!:(

There probably werent many of the BRKT's an what not. I know you dont want a flame war, but differnt strokes for different folks. I own Busse, Ferhman, BRKT, Fallkniven etc and use them all.

You know, I really don't know why!

My career is so involved and all-consuming that I hardly get out for anything ... but I really DON'T know why the more available Busse Fanatics haven't come to those gatherings. I can tell you that I find the Busse fans to be exuberant, but otherwise very normal folks.

Hmmm. Perhaps more advertising is needed??

Uh because Busse fans are mostly Wealthy fat alcoholics. If we want to start a fire in the woods we will pay one of you guys to do it.

All kidding aside its just a different demographic.

Possibly ... but I'm not convinced.

Look at Guyon, for example. He spends a lot of time over here ...

There may be hope for us yet. :D

So where does a poor and skinny Busse Fanatic like me fit in? :p

Where are these wilderness gatherings taking place? I will try to show up if they are not too far away.

Yah.I don't understand it much, people show off their "hard-use" knives and guns and they all look like showroom models. Mine look like they've been through at least a minor war...

Re: hard use BRKTs.

You'l probably never see pictures of me batoning or "using hard" my BRKT Aurora, it's not what I got it for. I got it for the more delicate woodscraft chores. If I'm going to use something hard, it will be the HI kukri that resides on the baldric with the Aurora. I have a feeling that maybe a lot of the Falkniven and BRKT users carry another tool for hard use and typically don't carry just one knife into the woods.

Mere speculation on my part, though.

I have just rounded up some bow and drill materials. I will be doing some moderately hard use with my F-1. I don't always have a person to photograph me while have fun...I mean practice my skills. :D

Outside of being lured to this post I mostly read the Busse sub forum.

If you want us to show up at your get togethers, we have to know about them.

There is a point about the Busse crowd being a different demographic. Every Busse enthusiast I have met has been a class act, even the rednecks. They are just nice people. I'm not saying the W&S crowd isn't just as great, I don't know.

At the recent Northern California Busse get together, any one who asked to come was welcome. We certainly got a lot of "hard use" pics and videos, including several beautiful custom knives/swords, LE models and Bark Rivers. We weren't out in the woods to do it but we got aged lumber to reproduce the hard conditions of a real survival setting.:D

Thanks for the advice. I tend to prefer canvas micarta, but got my Bravo1 with linen. The linen and the smooth finish haven't given me a real secure feeling, but I'll try this and see if it helps.
