A couple SHBM's

The hole size is most definitely a valid point. I didn't know there was a difference between the 2 fasteners in terms of gauge. I wonder....I'm curious: How much and where can it be RC tested?

out your way, just look up metal workers in the area that make high tech machine parts and they will most likely have one and may charge a small fee to do it. They may do it for free just for shits-n-giggles.:D

I use to have contacts up in Palmdale, but that was long ago and they are all gone now.

I'll have to check out mollecular Metallurgy. They do gun coating, machining and such. I had a knife that they TIALN (Titanium Aluminum Nitride) coated before. Thanks for the advice!

If you do have it done make sure to do it near the rear talon since it leaves quite an obvious mark. Since the blades are thru-hardenned, it does not matter were you take the Rc.

Thank you for the advice Dennis :D I'll make sure they don't do any damage if I get it done. Maybe I can get them to take it from the talon hold :D that would be cool!

You won't be able to have them do the test in a hole, it has to be on an external flat surface. The process will leave a small dot made by the stylus when it penetrates the metal. The best place to do it is under the handle prior to the handle being installed, but it is too late for that.

not in the hole but in that area.

Really? That's no biggie, I could drill off the handles then see if I can find screw fasteners anywhere and locktite them on once the test has been done.

no, you will ruin the handles. People have tried to remove them in the past. Just do it in the talon area.

The handles aren't that bad to take off. Even for a bear like me :p. I took the tubes off my EU-Mag with a drill. Wasn't bad...just was careful. I may just end up doing it in the talon area though. That's a little too much hassle. How deep an impression does it leave?

you can feel it with your finger. but it is not that big at all. About as big and deep as half a ball point pen point.

Check out the small dimple next to the lanyard hole.

Oh man! That's not a big deal at all! :p I was thinking it was much bigger and deeper! Thanks for the help and the pics!

Depends on the stylus used...but typically a hemispherical mark would be left, as Cobalt indicates. Also, the standard on the 'scientific side' used to be a three point test -- which left three marks. Why? Because we usually needed fairly impressive precision and accuracy in our answer, and we were usually working with poorly understood test pieces.

Now that I've gotten old, I don't have any more laboratories -- and have lost ready access to most lab equipment.:o

those sheaths came with every factory SHBM I ever saw. But I have bought SHBM's without them which means that either some did not come with those or some looser kept the sheath.:thumbdn:

The older sheath had a clip on belt loop and it rode much lower.
