A Day in the... Knife? Daily, What do you actually use your EDC for?

Sharpening pencils, spreading cream cheese, cutting rope and twine, opening packages, rubbing the handle like a worry stone, whittling, and looking awesome when someone needs a knife but doesn't have one.

Plus I fiddle with it while I'm on the phone or bored in a meeting, and seem to think better if I have it in my hand. Mostly small traditionals for me, but I like a spyderco ukpk and my kershaw skyline just fine too.

Lots of the stuff mentioned. I personally use mine to cut a nice vent hole in the lid of my cafeteria coffee cup to speed up the caffeinating process.

Food and packaging mostly. I have weak hands due to a medical condition and easy opening packaging is anything but for me.

Dude....that was the funniest thing I've seen in a long time. I can totally relate to that. Its 04:30 in my house, and I'm laughing my ass off. Thanks for that.

Yesterday I made a few adjustments to machines at the gym with my Vic Pioneer and LM Surge (replaced a couple of cables, tightened nuts and screws, etc.). I used my knife to cut rope, open boxes and trim some rubber floor tiles to fit properly.

To be honest, 99% of the time a SAK or multitool does everything I need in the city. I just like carrying nice folders. On the days I spend at my ranch a small fixed blade is better.

Well, looks like the packaging won. Looks like Bernie Sanders could use some help. That poor fellows impatience could cause him to have a heart attack one of these days.

....The one thing I don't do, and kinda don't understand, is trimming fingernails.
I don't either other than in an emergency. Been known to "clean" fingernails (usually in private), but not trim fingernails. I keep fingernail clippers in my vehicle and on my desk as those seem to be the times that I actually notice.

I use my edc frequently but it has no time table. As a cutting device it's there for whatever pops up. One day I will use it repeatedly and the next for only opening a package or mail. I use my edc for knife things although I carry a SAK (and often a another folder) and the SAK is a more versatile tool than your a typical folder. I seldom use a folder for food cutting but it's there if I have no choice.

Yesterday I used my Emerson to open a box, and to open a bag of wood shavings for spreading. Throughout the day, I use my EDC for food prep, boxes, and anything that needs cutting in the barn (usually shavings and hay twine).

So EDC for food prep... Unless I am with no other option I can't see the appeal. Its much harder to clean, wouldn't a kitchen knife just be much easier all around?

And all done with this one. Who says people don't use their CRK's ;)

Beautiful knife but I hope it can be worked on without touching all those slotted screws ?

Yesterday I sharpened a grease pen, cleaned the edges of some copper sheet, trimmed some plastic sheet to match a surface, opened a few bags, cut some tape, and later cut down some cardboard.

Typically around my home studio knives get used for domestic chores, outside of that really depends on the particular day.

I used my Military to cut four zip ties that were keeping a gate closed, so I could gain access to a job site.

I get this question often, at home I've got plenty of kitchen knives and use those. However, I spend a lot of time at other places with no quality cutlery available and, being a competitive athlete, I eat 6 or 7 meals a day that consist mostly of fresh whole foods.

So I keep a small knife in my backpack almost exclusively for food. I've used my EDC folder on occasion as well.

It's not like I'm preparing a three course dinner for ten people, just something simple like slicing some tomatoes or cutting up chicken breasts.

For instance, a few minutes ago after my last training session I sliced a kiwi, some strawberries and grapes to put on top of my banana/blueberry protein hot cakes. Delicious.

Cut open a few tubes of caulk. Cleaned up saw cuts on yellow pine deck as needed all day long at the saw cutting while cutting pieces of deck for my guys. Sharpened my pencil many times throughout the day. Cut a water bottle bottom off at a angle to make a oil fill funnel for one of my subcontractors. Cut my cigar end into a V cut. Opened a package of driver bits (packaged as LD's above!). Cleaned the dried paint out from under my finger nails after priming materials. Scraped a little dried adhesives off new metal flashings. Cut the collar to fit on a pipe jack. Cut through the fiberglass strapping on a bundle of 2X8s at Lowe's when I couldn't find anyone to open it for me.

Just another day at work. BTW, my EDC this week is a ZT 0909, which I can't recommend enough as a really good choice as an all around practical use knife. It is a little tank, and as a closeout can be had for $135 from one of the BF approved vendors.

I used my Indian River Jack for: open letter, open packages, open computer equipment, cut some other stuff at work that I can't remember now. Every morning at work I also cut down those plastic stirrers that are way to long for my coffee mug.
