A Day in the Life of a Field Knife Updated with Fire Making

Your insights are much appreciated and it’s very apparent that everyone is really enjoying this thread. It’s one thing to carry a big knife into the field from time to time for the pure joy of it, entirely another to have to consider what works and what is reasonable/necessary to carry day in and day out for work along with all the other equipment the job requires.

Hope that prototype makes it to you so we can get your perspective on how it compares to the original.

Hey Andy, I’ll be happy to lend you the FK2 prototype PT scored for me last week. I’m sure we would all like to see your comparison review, and you could help Nathan dial in his production FK2 for the preorder.

Thanks for the offer man!
I would say maybe after the New Year when things slow down lets chat if you are still willing or if I am not able to score one on a Fun Friday event by then*

Andy, pssst! Keep this one on the hush-hush but I hear that Nathan is the best person to have as a proxy around here on fun Friday sales, even though he's slow as heck ;)

We would all like to see your comparison review, too, Gus. And comparison pics!:thumbsup:

Thanks Christian, but unfortunately I don’t work in the wilderness, and I don’t go camping. I work in a hospital. No bears, but there are a lot of nasty bugs around. It is in a rough section of Miami, I might need it to defend myself while walking to my car late at night. I did promise to do a comparison review, so I’ll try to put something together, but I don’t think it’s going to help Nathan dial in his FK2. I’ll admit it, I just wanted a Motherfucker. :D

Yikes! Stay safe, man.
It’s a CPK. In D3V. So we already know it will cut well and hold up to serious use. But you have enough knives in that amazing collection of yours to share your informed thoughts about how it feels in the hand, balance etc. in particular compared to the 1st gen. And pics of course... :D

Oh, and I don’t blame you for wanting that mofo. Who wouldn’t?

Man the UF; perfect for late night walks along unlit streets!
I would be always carrying a weapon if in a big city like that; bladed or boom or both.
The “wilderness” is actually pretty soft on a knife as you are only ever cutting wood fibre or flesh vs. prying open doors, opening walls, that kind of stuff. I do have a Stider DB-L getting sheath work done for said envrionments but I don’t ask or expect that thing to feather me up a fire stick or pull apart wild meat.

Yeah the UF is excellent for concealed carry. Nathan said he use to carry his into some shady areas.

Hey, really, thanks for taking the time to share these!

Great looking dog, btw. I‘m sure he makes an excellent companion out there.

Also have another question: I see you carry an axe with you in the winter to check the thickness of ice (maybe other uses as well) and so pairing it with the FK probably has you pretty well covered. Are there other times (maybe other seasons) where you prefer to leave the axe behind and opt for a bigger knife, eg the HDFK, instead (for overall weight considerations)?

Here is a challenging part of the day: what axe to pick...

Nice display!
Man, you’re really putting a lot of hipsters over in Brooklyn to shame :D

Favorite axe and hatchet?

Axe: Pumb Cruiser double bit in the middle of the rack. Got it from an old trapper who had bought it new, kept it in excellent condition while over 40 years of use on the trapline. Received it properly filed and shaving sharp and have kept it going ever since.

Hatchet: Winchester stamped/made in USA on the far left as it was a gift for our 5 year anniversary from Wife along with the axe rack (traditional gift is wood for year 5).
