A Gladius Deserves a Shield...

^^^ That's awesome haha

I wouldn't use that shield for home defense, but I bet that would make for some fun when the snow hits (snowball fights, makeshift saucer, etc.)

Edited to add: In a home invasion, I wouldn't want to be carrying ANY shield that is going to be used in tight close quarters. Riot shields are used in public (read wide open spaces) and iwth great numbers behind them and the ones used in jail usually have 4+ officers backing up the guy holding the shield. When my life is on the line, my firearm is my choice :)

If you want a shield, just because....get a shield. But I see zero practical use for it unless it is for use in a prison or somewhere else where weapon options are controlled/minimized. And as for the round one...not even in a prison.

Even those big ones the cops use, I pointed out to a local officer at an event that it was only going to offer protection against pistol rounds. Seemed to be news to him.

Now if it was lightweight and could take .308 or .30-06....sign me up. Otherwise, just for looks and "to have" in my opinion.

BTW, they are MUCH cheaper than $100 in surplus stores/sites. The german riot shields were like $20 in the past.

Shields that are going to stop high velocity rounds like 30-06 are going to weigh a crap load.

Nothing wrong with wanting a riot shield. If it is rated to stop handgun rounds. I worked with bullet proof lexan, and for a sheet rated to stop .44 mag, a shield would be pretty darned heavy.

If some one came in with a hand gun, it would be mighty handy, for the same reason that bullet proof vests are, stopping a round from entering your vitals. Swat teams seem to think they have a use in house clearing.

I know mine won't stop a bullet. But will stop a sword, dagger, hammer etc. A hit to the head, throat, or even rib cage could be fatal from it. Pretty danged heavy though!

And, I don't need any reason other than fun to have one.

I would like a matching helmet, and chainmail, but don't have the money to justify buying it.

That was my point, you won't find a lightweight one that can take rifle rounds.

It'd really suck to get bum rushed and then pinned down with your own shield. That is why the ones they use in corrections are curved outward so you can pin the other guy if needed.

For home defense I'll stick with my gammas and Glock with a light attached or MSAR.

But again, for getting it just to have it have fun and get a shield.

you don't actually think i'm going to rely on a sword for home defense do you?

I use a glock 22 and a tlr-1 tac light for that. The gladius and shield are for FUN...

But, will it stop little Darths lightsaber ;)

very cute, uh, i mean, cool!

I honestly didn't see that you were the OP or I would have known it wasn't serious. I just didn't want some poor bastard getting slaughtered because he thought it'd be cool to use a gladius and riot shield for home defense.

Plus I didn't know how defense threads worked over here. I was just trying to help out.

However, if going outside to check on a bump in the night, I'm thinking that G22/TLR-1 in one hand and Gladius in the other would be something to reckon with. ;)
