A good Air Rifle?

1200fps is usually acheived with the new alloy light pellets that dont hold energy for long. Look at an RWS 48, (search, they are less that $200) amazing accuracy, tons of power and wont bus tthe sound barrier.

The PBA Ammo isn't anything to brag about. I still prefer lead.

At the price point you're after just decide what caliber you want then go and get the best deal, because quite frankly what ever you get will do the job great!

Please don't worry too much about power because a huge majority of Brits take rabbits, squirrels, wood pigeon plus other vermin with much lower power air rifles than you guys.

If I told you how much my air rifle cost in $ you'd probably have a stroke, but it's half the price of the air rifle that the other Brit (pilgrimuk) mentioned he had, for the price of a Theoben you fellows could be armed up to the teeth with rhino stopping guns, and that's no joke!

But there's a difference between our air guns and yours. We need a FAC to tune them to a higher power, you don't. You generally see air rifles as play things. Our air rifles truly are "expertly made low power rifles" in their own right.

At the power levels that they're set for off the shelf purchase, we can kill any small game with a well placed shot within 30yds.

The bloke who I bought my Air Arms S310, had customised it and tuned it up for culling geese.

I own a Weihrauch HW 77 in .22.
I have never needed nor wished for anything more

I am Weirauch owner, HW77K and HW100S, these are guns for life, accurate reliable and with the HW77, more than 15years old and still as accurate and powerful (actually a little more) as new with NO parts replacement required.

I have a Sheridan Blue Streak, it works well shoots straight and is a lot of fun.

That's a good one. There are others.

Try this http://www.airguns.net/

They have links to the Yellow Forum and others.

There are two ways (maybe more) to buy an air rifle.

1. Go to Walmart and pick one out that you like and be happy.

2. Study all the information available on the internet. Ask opinions on forums like this. Drive yourself crazy worrying about the minutia of the subject. Been there, done that. ;)

I'm beginning to see that. :) I've now been to most of the links that you kind folks have put up here for me (again thank you all so much I would never have found all of those on my own). Made the mistake of starting to read the reviews. For every single rifle there will be a pile of good AND a pile of bad reviews. Which makes them all pretty much useless. Sigh.

That's a good recommendation, thanks!

The gamo whispers are decent guns. Buy a multi pack of pellets so you can try different shapes and weights out to determine what shoots best in your gun. I found pointed did good in one gun and domed and match did good in another.

I've actually been leaning that way. I need to take out some squirrels who have decided they like my attic which means plinking them in the attic and the yard. I was thinking a quieter gun would bother the neighbors less who will then bother me less.

A friend of mine has one of those as well. I haven't shot any true high end air rifles but I was impressed with it. Walking off aways when my buddy was shooting, I'd have to say that it is definitely quiter than other air rifles I've shot (mostly Daisy, Crosman, etc.). Also, after a few minutes familiarization, I was shooting ice chips at 20 yards with the iron sights- and I'm pretty much crap shooting a rifle :o. So it is pretty accurate also.

This is what I got only a few dollars cheaper last year. It's a great deal, especially if you don't mind the possibility of some touched up cosmetic flaws.

If you go to the yellow forums you can find some free/cheap modifications that will get you up in the 800+fps range with 18grn pellets which is pretty good for a sub $150 air rifle.

Thanks for the second recommendation. Some of the reviews I read suggested that there were problems with the scope and screws working loose etc. which has kept me from pulling the trigger (pun intended) to this point. Also, there have been some really good recommendations of other products here as well, so I find myself in a quandary. (Of course) :)

I picked up one of the Crosman TitanGP nitro piston rifles from Walmart for $149.99. Not sure why it's like $70 less than the cheapest Benjamin version and they're probably the exact same gun. Anyway, trigger was the worst I've ever used, squirt guns and kid's toys included, so I replaced it with a charliedatuna model for $30 or so. It's in .22 and is accurate enough with the Crosman Premier hollowpoints for a head shot on a squirrel at 30yds. Complete penetration on broadside shots at 20yds. Haven't chronoed it but judging by the rule of airguns it's probably only doing 700fps with a standard 14.3gr pellet.

My Benjamin Nitro All weather .22 averages around 725 FPS over a Chrony with standard lead 14.3 Crossman pellets. Most of the other brands turn in something in the 600's.

You are right, those triggers are absolutely terrible!
