a great overall edc?

EDC knives are typically small-medium sized. I found an Endura was a little long for my tastes.
What's your budget?

Kershaw: Leek, blur, Skyline
Spyderco: Tenacious, Sage I or II, Delica, Caly 3 or 3.5.
Benchmade: MiniGriptillian, 940, 707

There are others as well, but those are ones I've owned and they are all great choices. The Sage II is probably my favorite.

Well since its going to be a present, i would say like 150 or under. Parents wanna buy me something ill like so if i pick it out they will get me it. I dont wanna ask for something too expensive though.

I'm another that found the Endura too big for my liking, although if you anticipate using it while wearing gloves then that might be less of an issue. I really like my Spyderco Military as a glove friendly folder. However, for general EDC that doesn't take up a lot of pocket space it is very, very hard to go past the Delica 4 in FFG. A great slicer, the VG-10 steel is relatively easy to maintain, holds a great edge, comes in a range of cool colours. I also like its cousin, the Spyderco Byrd Meadowlark 2, which is a similar size with a 8Cr13MoV blade at a fraction of the price.

As others have said though, don't discount a Victorinox SAK. I carry a Super Tinker everywhere and have given something like four away to friends and family as they start seeing how useful such a tool is.

Usually have one of these two in my pocket most of the time.

I think Mossyhorn is right on. I would also reco a Emerson MicroCommander, black 3" blade that really looks nice; will serve you well.

...and folks...think on this. The fellow right above my post, Jim Ankerson, the most well-known blade-steel tester I've ever known. He has compiled charts and listings, reviews of blade-steels and has categorized them in terms of cutting ability and edge-holding.
About any super-steel you can come up with...he's tested and reported on.
And what does he carry? S30V, maybe S35VN. There's a free lesson...beyond interesting...Think on it.

I'd take a serious look at a Sage II. It comes really close to the solid feel and strength of a CRK Sebenza. I'm a titanium freak so maybe I'm a little biased, but no one can deny it's a great EDC knife. There are a few on eBay for about $150ish. Normally I try to avoid eBay but sometimes deals can be had there. So long as you buy from sellers with a large positive rating it's fine.

My suggestion would be to buy the biggest knife you're personally comfortable carrying and, of course, is legal to carry in your jurisdiction. Why? Because it's easier to perform little tasks with a big knife than it is to perform big tasks with a little knife. There are enough "big knife" suggestions floating around this thread to take care of you. But your OP contained one that's a personal favorite of mine . . . the Spyderco Endura. If you can handle carrying a knife that large, you couldn't possibly go wrong with it.

If you want a modern folder with clip, give the Benchmade Mini-Onslaught a try. If you can look past the funky name, it has a grind that makes it an efficient cutting tool while still being a stout blade, contoured handles that fill the hand, a large belly for food prep on a cutting board and the steel is a good compromise between edge holding and sharpenability.

Again, consider the Buck 500 series knives. They aren't popular on this forum but there's a reason they've been making them since the 1970's without design changes. They're men's knives, not boy's knives.

Now, if you want or need one hand opening, they aren't for you. If you want black knives, super steel knives, forum oohs and aahs, they aren't for you. But if you want a cutting tool that looks great, carries great, and won't freak out your mom, consider the advice to get a more traditional folder. Some other good choices (SAK, Case, etc.) have also been suggested.

Right now i carry a pretty decent sized knife. I carry the junkyard dog 2. I dont really like the blade steel though, it seems to rust really easy and gets rolls in the edge real easy. Along with that its clip is just an abomination.

Don't overlook CSG's suggestion for the Buck 501. For a single EDC, it is hard to beat that knife.

Others have already mentioned the Benchmade mini-griptilian, the CRKT Ripple (a personal favorite - I love that little knife and carry it often) and the Spyderco Paramilitary 2 (not so easy to find), so let me throw in the Spyderco Manix 2 for your consideration. I personally prefer it to the PM2 and find it to be a very comfortable and usable knife. [Edit: The Manix2 XL is also available and is a great knife as well should you want something larger.]

Anyhow, I have one of each of these mentioned in my post and if I could only own one, it would be the Buck 501. I've had one since the '80s. FWIW.

Had Benchmade Grip & Mini grip, had the Benchmade Bone Collectors in both sizes. Gave them away.

Started out with a Spyderco Delica which I lost, then found, then lost again but found my preference. For EDC I'd strongly recommend starting with a Delica with a full flat grind. I now prefer a bit more blade so typically carry one of two Enduras or my Caly 3.5.

If you want something a bit more special than the Delica/ Endura option I can't recommend the Caly series more highly. You can choose between the Caly 3, Caly 3.5 or the Calypso (nearly 4 inches - which by the way is in my pocket as I write this!)

Good luck in making your choice. I hope it is the beginning of a fun journey for you...

Ben

I would like to get a pm2 but i can't find one anywhere there all out of stock or it says delayed by manufacturer. Ive actually been looking for one for like a month and a half, My first real EDC knife was my kershaw blackout and a couple weeks later i ached for something more and pretty much everyone on yt and here said how great the para 2 is but i can't find one. Last month i got a kershaw junkyard dog 2.2 and it just isn't floating my boat, don't like flipper only, the pocketclip is crap, the steel rusts so easy on me.

I have kind of given up on finding a para 2 for now and thats where this thread comes in. I do definitely feel like my journey through knives will progress over the years, 2-3 months ago i never thought a knife was worth more then 20 until i saw the quality in my first kershaw. Now im looking at that 100ish range so im hoping to see a jump in materials usability and quality. Who knows maybe one day ill work my way to high quality, that day just isnt now.

I'm going to suggest the Endura. The VG-10 steel keeps and edge (for me) for a whole week before I have to sharpen it. It hasn't rusted on me. It is easy to touch up, and it takes a wicked edge. It is easy enough for me to handle, sometimes even doing precise cuts. You said you wanted an all-around blade, and this is it, without getting ridiculously expensive

FWIW, all but 2 of those knives were under $70. The PM2 & the Manix 2 XL were under $125. ;)

I honestly find myself playing with my knives more then i use them. Its relaxing to just sit there and open and close them lol.

Check out the 586 mini barrage. Great handle materials, excellent blade profile and m390 steel. Assisted though, but if it bothers you I understand it is relatively easy to remove.

Already been mentioned a few times but my top 2 choices are the paramilitary 2 & mini griptillian. I have a mini Ritter with stone washed blade and it may be the best all-around edc I own.
