A lesson in half-assing sale posts

Realistically, paypal is the expected default... if sellers don't want/accept that method of payment, I think most would agree that it is incumbent on them to state that from the start. Saying that he should have asked, on that detail, doesn't fly.

I updated the post. PayPal is cool. But there's a myriad of different fee structures they apply, mostly in edge cases like new accounts, international, non-US based banks, etc.

You got me. :p

I did certainly half ass the post. I added more details to the top. But, despite my half assery, my point is you should ask any questions you are unclear about beforehand instead of quoting rules chapter and verse.
You half ass your for sale thread and then blame the buyer for not asking questions

As far as him quoting rules chapter and verse, I believe you did that first.

Yeah, I agree. Going to drink some more coffee and apply edits.

D DMD08 I'm sorry. I felt jerked around by you and am coming around to the idea I'm more to blame here for half-assing my sale post. Putting myself in your shoes I probably would have backed out as well. Apologies.

The newer boxes don’t fit. And that’s a pretty cheapskate shipping method. And doesn’t account for international. Or different requested shipping options. Or a signature. Or any number of different things.

I’m happy to include shipping in the US, but based on our interaction I figured I would ask. As Daegan should have before committing.

All you have to do is state your final price as shipped US. You are allowed to negotiate international shipping prices under the rule. If you prefer to add a signature to it add that in to the original price. Those newer CRK boxes are a pain but they don't cost much more to send, $2-$3 dollars should not be a deal breaker on a CRK sale-at least not to me.
I would not be happy with any add on $ after the original agreement.

Excellent post Josh!

As Ron Swanson would say...

I had someone do the same thing to me when I tried to buy a knife. The person was upset when I said I was no longer interested after he added on shipping and fees in private messages. Immediately went to my ignore list.

Solicitation of offer.
Counter-offer (PP)
Counter to counter offer. (fees and shipping)
Failure to agree. No contract/no deal.
Happens all the time in th real world. Very routine.
No reason for anyone to be upset - at least until the words start flying.

Assumed terms never stated are practically and legally immaterial.

Sounds like this is resolved, so I don't really want to beat a dead horse, but one thing I thought was worth responding to:

Not really sure what you mean by "cheapskate shipping method". USPS Priority is 2-3 days to pretty much anywhere in the US. Are you really sending your knives using something faster, like Fedex/UPS overnight?

Generally speaking, I think USPS Priority is the default shipping method here (except maybe for very inexpensive items, where First Class makes more sense). Personally, I assume listings include Priority shipping, unless specifically stated otherwise, and I think many others do likewise.

Also, signature confirmation is for the seller's protection, not the buyer's. A seller can save the $2 if they want, but I'm pretty sure if the buyer claims the item didn't arrive (regardless of tracking status), PayPal will side with them if there is no signature.

Smallest flat rate box has zero room for any packing materials. No insurance/signature (agreed for seller) is cheap depending on how you weigh risk.

Someone saying “shipping is only $7.35!” is projecting the cheapest possible cost for a <1lbs package in the smallest flat rate box. It's like when people use those document flat rate envelopes and don't put any padding to save a dollar.

I can reasonably, again depending on how you way risk, seeing USPS Priority shipping costing anywhere from $8 to almost $20 depending on item worth and insurance.

Be professional in your sales. List the total price including estimated shipping in the USA plus another 3% to 4% for PP fees. It's easy to use the USPS site to determine shipping rates and insurance. Round up a bit if you feel like it but the price you list must be the one you will accept.

I list shipping to US50 which includes Alaska and Hawaii. If a potential buyer wants international shipment, you have the right to deny that or you can add the costs of the added shipping. Understand the rules for international shipping insurance and also the ramifications of not listing the true value on the customs declaration.

Also learn to accept it when you are wrong and don't whine here since it makes you look, well like a whiner, and not many people will want to buy or sell with you. On BF your reputation is everything. Don't scarifice it over a couple of dollars.

I hardly think it unreasonable for a buyer to assume that a seller is abiding by the site sales rules with no indication otherwise, or for the GB&U people to expect you to be abiding by the rules.

You listed a price. Site rules say the price must be out-the-door. There is an exception for shipping internationally. It would be best practice to state your shipping rules up front in the post, i.e. "... $XXX shipped CONUS to your door, insured, with signature confirmation via USPS small flat rate box. Contact for international shipping."

There. All confusions allayed with less than three seconds' worth of typing.

All of this says you just can't be bothered, which is a great bit of feedback about you for the rest of us as potential buyers and sellers.

EDIT: Maybe try the Facebook or Instagram sales. Those fools also can't be bothered with things like 'accurate prices,' 'payment details,' 'shipping details,' or sometimes even 'what the item is that I'm selling other than this one picture.'

Not sure what the bolded part has to do with this thread-

By the way- I sell on Facebook and IG quite alot and the same crap happens here, that happens on those platforms.
