All,
In the last year I've seen (OleyFermo's) Jimmy Fikes' porch light on at the bottom of the page, twice, and wondered why he hadn't dropped in and posted any of his witty comments.Well today I got an Email from him and thought I might post it for anyone who might be interested.

Hey, Doug

Hope you had a good Thanksgiving. I did get your earlier message, I'm just slow to answer as usual. And since I am always slow, I ought to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year now!

I'm not doing very well at this point. Am in constant pain from a lower back injury and there's apparently nothing much that can be done other than for me to grin and bear it. I am in better shape... by a long shot... than I was at this time last year. I've been improving slowly ever since I told all the doctors to go to hell and set myself up a physical rehab program... walking / weight lifting. Given another year of improvement I might even be able to get out in the shop and do some work... that's assuming that I ever get my new shop up and running so that I have somewhere TO work.

And I do remember you, of course. LOL And testing Shiva's blade. I also remember that I have a knife somewhere that I need to send you to play with for awhile when I finally manage to get out into my new shop building and make some sense of the piles of stuff out there. I have no idea where the knife is at this point, but I'm sure it's among all the bits and pieces somewhere.

I've only stopped in the Forums a very few times this last year. It's depressing for me to read about something I really enjoy and not be able to make anything.I've stopped in a couple times recently to look at links Matt Lamey sent me of new work that he had posted.Matt drops by here occasionally and we talk pretty frequently on the phone. He's doing some excellent work and hopefully it will only get better.

Hope all is going well with you this holiday season...and ALL the time for that matter. Please send my hellos along to Shiva when you talk with him.

Cheers!

Jimmy

Doug :)

I miss having Jimmy around this forum. His posts were always very entertaining.

Jimmy, if you read this, have a very merry Christmas, and I hope all goes well for you.

Hi Doug,

Hate to bump a thread this old, but wanted to ask you to check your regular email for a note I just sent. I FINALLY found the knife that I tested against the Small Spirit blade from Shiva Ki years ago and need to talk with you about sending it to you to play around with, as promised. :D

Hellos to Roger and Keith, too! Hope all you guys are doing well.

Jimmy Fikes

Jimmy,

WOW ! This is fantastic news ! :D

Most certainly interested in getting to use and play with that knife.
Glad it turned up AND happy to hear you're getting in the shop and making knives.
Just now read your email and will be getting back to you shortly.
THANKS again, Jimmy !

Joe,

HERE is one complete with some great folks posting, it does get a little...warm:D, at times.

Just realized long time poster Flava(Flavius) had some posts in that thread.
Sadly, we have recently lost him...DETAILS forthcoming. :(

Now it's all coming back and let me say what a wonderful time that was for bladeforums

I still have Stevens Small Spirit

Hey Doug,

Thanks for the address. Sent you an email. Knife will be shipped next week. I'm going to refinish it this weekend and sharpen it up if I remember how to do that.

Posted in the other thread about Flavius. That was some sad news indeed. He was a very nice guy and I'm going to miss his constant razzing. R.I.P. Flavius.

Jimmy

I remember something about this

Please refresh my memory :)

Joe,

I have a problem remembering what day of the week it is. What I do in my own crafty way is to substitute "imagination" for "memory".:D

I see Doug has posted a link to the old thread, dang it. Now I won't get to blow things all out of proportion.;) Thanks, Doug!!

Jimmy, take care of that back, stranger! i just got back today from my pain specialist after having a couple of shots of steroids into my lower back. The ten year old spinal fusion is finally going south on me, and there's a spinal decompression in the next couple of months and another vertebra getting fused sometime later this year. I'll agree with you the fewer doctors the better, but teaching Kelley to do orthopedic surgery, just ain't happening!:D

She says hello, and we're up to three grandsons now...one of the few perks of getting older.

And if you ever need a useless laborer to help set up shop, give a yell. We'll leave the anvil lifting to someone else with a more useful back.;)

Good to see all the "old" guys on here. Geez, John, been awhile, 3 grandsons!! My wife is healing from a fusion, seems it will take awhile. Good to see Jimmy getting out some blades and coming here to visit. Dudley got a gem!

Hi, Jimmy.....lovin' #7 my friend .

Mr. D!!!

Glad #7 is working out well for ya. My shop helper, Chris, has just posted (I think) the rest of the "minimum requirement" tests for that particular blade on YouTube. Impact testing, trying to snap the point by jabbing it into 3/4 inch cabinet grade plywood and cranking the knive over to the side, and pine knot chopping. We also finally got the old testing video from way back in 1993-94 converted into a format to post on YouTube. I'll send along the URLs if you like. You might get a laugh or two out of watching a crazed, much younger Fikes (and a few of his friend) hack, stab and slice everything in sight with various edged implements. Note that I always attempt to make up for my lack of social skills by being amusing.:D

Hope all is going well for you and yours!

Jimmy

Sure is nice to have you posting again around here

Please stick around and spread that knowledge brother :)

Hey, John:)

Good to hear from you. Sorry to hear about the bad back, but glad to hear that you're getting along well otherwise. Is Kelly still having to put up with you??? It must be the grandkids that make such a chore worthwhile:D

Of course I need useless laborers to help with the shop. I work well with them since I'm a useless supervisor. If you're ever in this neck of the woods you know that you're always welcome to drop in for a spell. We'd go shooting again at the strip pits except for the fact that they've been closed to the public for years, dammit:grumpy:

Drop me a line at my old email address sometime. I enjoy our yaks. Say hi to Kelly for me and give her a big hug.

Old, down-in-the-back Jimmy:D

Hey Jimmy good to see you here. I'm going to go look for that video!

Hey, Win,

Old guys? OLD? I don't remember getting old... but then again I don't remember much of anything nowadays except to eat three times a day... or four, or five.

Glad Dudley is enjoying the knife:) That's the first one that got the "dark and sinister" bleach finish. It also had his lucky number on the tang. With Maggie and Chris helping with the material ordering and shipping and general bull work in the shop, I do believe I'm going to be able to get knives out the door on a pretty regular basis. I should have gotten some helpers who have functioning brains years (decades?) ago:D

Good to hear that you've healed up enough to get out and about and that your wife continues to improve. Maggie always asks how you guys are doing.

I've visited here pretty frequently over the years but try to keep my yapping to a minimum. The old adage "It's better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open my mouth and be proven one" is something that I try to keep in mind.

Take care of yourself and be well, young man!

Jimmy

Oh yeah, it's there! I just started watching, that first tree whack with the Jungle Honey was nuts... so clean! That was about the coolest thing I have seen in a while.

I'm going to have try that brass rod spine whack test and the blade being tested is cool.

Thanks for making those videos available!
