The purple block is dyed Buckeye burl from mark at Burl Source. It looks kind of like purple marble. When i get a sec, i will get a picture of it.

who is a supplier or who are the supplies for these beautiful pieces of wood. Wow!
Id imagine close to 75% would be from Burl source. Look at their site and in the for sale section alot. Im always out for good pieces of wood. I might sit on them for 6 mnths to a year before I have a knife worthy of some of my choice pieces.

Most of my wood came from a local supplier (The Board Hoarder), though I have been a loyal Burl Source customer for a while now. The local source sells only "natural" wood, which I have to get stabilized myself. But he has the largest variety I have ever encountered.

I might sit on them for 6 mnths to a year before I have a knife worthy of some of my choice pieces.

I have 3 blocks of wood....one is a spalted maple burl, the other is some Australian burl I can't recall, and the other is a redwood root burl...that I've had for more than 3 years. I swear one day I'll use them...but they are going to be on that special knife that no other wood will do. I actually have a knife I'm working on now that will probably get the spalted maple burl...if I ever grow the balls capable of laying into the piece of DT damascus that is the blade. It's HT'd, and ready to go....just need to find the balls I misplaced. :)

Man up, watercrawl. Never let your material master you... YOU are the master. Bend them to your will.

I got mine from the awful dreaded auction site. Craiganderton studios. I have made two purchases from him, amazing stuff, had a couple of conversations with him, nice guy with a great sense of humor. My next will be from Burl source as new stuff comes in. Been watching patiently for something to catch my eye.

I picked up a couple of new blocks of wood recently.

Some spalted maple:

Can you believe the lines in that chunk of wood? That block is just strong of 4.5" wide...so three blocks of handle material across for reference.

Some spalted hackberry:

This one I'm going to cross cut....makes for a neat effect.

Black ash burl:

Bought these in block format...what a great seller with some insanely beautiful wood.

I go on binges where I buy a lot of wood....I need to stay away from eBay I tell you.

Cocobolo :)
Ebay can be a good but dangerous friend. This was part of a piece that is large enough for four to six handles.
Since I was the only bidder I got it for one whole euro :D

Well....I am mostly guessing what I have. I bought almost 100# of blocks off Craigslist...

First might be Myrtlewood....

Next, I think is some Wenge, Cocobola, and slightly spalted maple burl. I have about 40# of the maple.

Then, a big block of Thuya burl with a block of Ebony. Macassar?

There's a few other pieces, two boxes more.... with some that looks like big leaf maple with good chatoyance.

Come on guys! Make this thread longer!

Brian,
That Wenge looks pretty cool.
I have seen some of the makers use it and do a wire brush finish.
Gives the wood a really cool textured look.
