A Midsummer Night's Snark

I'm curious... Did you get a regular farm jack, or spend the extra $ for the extrication jack? I've got a regular 4 ton farm jack from Tractor Supply that I've used to lift some sheds and some other tasks around the homestead, and it cost less than $100. I'm really wondering if that extrication jack is worth the extra $150?

i got the EXTREME jack, which is basically 100 buckaroos

has the improved based with quickrelease and the improved chain toggle on top for 3/8s chain or other frobs like shackles...

did not buy the FANCY super extrication model, which ONLY has the super fancy base.

figure, for my needs, "good enough", otherwise, eh, i screw some 4x4 to the bottom of mine for special chores

not ripping apart any small block cars soon :D

plus, for what i saved, i can buy 2-3 harbor freight clones, or even a TSC clone (or 2), or 2 real ones :D

now, SOMEDAY, the super extrication model might be amusing... but i wanted a starer model, and i have "stuff to do"...

yea WW, that is an awesome workspace. I am in the process of adding something like that to my property. The one thing I wish my new house had is a garage so I wouldn't have to worry with it, but a separate workspace is a grand idea.

In other news: My wife found this ugly damn thing attached to a tree in our yard. We have no idea what it is (some sort of seed pod obviously). Anyone familiar with northern Virginia willing to take a stab at helping me figure out what it is? Thanks

a type of dogwood, a fruit, it's edible, at least when ideally ripe. a little sweet. google "dogwood fruit". they're not amazing, but you could probably make a jam or salad from them.

as far as i know :D

WW, If it's not in your future plans, you might consider adding insulation and then adding sheet rock.

It really helps with the heat reduction. My shop does not have A/C. If I leave the main door open at night (with a jury-rigged screen door to keep the riff-raff out), the temp inside will drop to near whatever the low is. I then close the door in the morning and the insulation/sheet rock keeps the temp down to the mid 90s when it's 100+ out. Not the greatest, but I try not to work in the shop during the summer during the heat of the day. A.M. work or night work only.

Gonna head up to Colorado Springs later today and check out Sportsman's Warehouse and Bass Pro and see if I can find some ammo for my rifles I got yesterday. I had already made plans to go shooting with a coworker on Monday.

Smart. You can get a good 12000 ish BTU for not a ton of money if you dont buy it in summer, and that will not only cool the space but it will keep up with heat generated by equipment running, and lighting as well. Really 10k probably will too, but with the lack of insulation, and the equipment you plan to use, you definitely want to oversize rather than under. I will say though, spend a little more and you can find those that cool, and also heat. Not a bad idea even in Florida.

I seen a 14000 for 350... Used for one season... If I get something over 10 I'll try just using it... If I get 8-10 I'll use it with the window unit most likely...

Hell if it takes a 12 and the window unit..... I'll eventually do it.... I'll get it comfortable in there one way or the other..

Bahahahaha! Hilarious!

Oh, WW. That work space? THAT'S FREAKING AWESOME BROTHER! I love it you lucky bastid! There's even room up the end to put a Cot for when you're to drunk to stumble back to the house. Magnificent.. I'm with Spike, I'd just like to have a bench..

Thanks man. Got enough room for a beer fridge, futon, and small poker table.... Thinking ahead lol

I bet he just strungs his hammok up in there.

I'm thinking about it... I'd want to build up the supports more first... But it could very well happen :D

Thought about insulation first... Adding half decent insulation to an already finished building is expensive..

Like I could buy another shed for what it would cost to insulate this one... Albeit smaller... Still.

It would definably help.... But I ran some numbers... If I'm in my shop for 5 hours a day.... Let's say I added insulation and then I could run my ac for only 2-3 hours and the insulation kept it cool the rest of the time....

Id say it would take 70 million years for the insulation cost to be justified LMAO

2 hours or so of less ac running a day vs 800-1200 on insulation cost...

Like this one guy.... Spent thousands on a smaller solar panel kit.... Saved him 15-30 a month on electricity....

Will be worth it if he never has to replace any panels or anything..... In the next 25 years lol.

Now if I could afford the insulation I'd be all over it.... First I need to handle some vapor barriers though.

If i pump enough cold air in and make sure it stays in... I'm thinking it should get nice and cool...

The 5400 tries... It will get it down to 83-86 ish when it was 94 outside.... Took 2 hours... But before I turned it on it was over 100 in the shed.... Like a damn oven...

Need more POWER :D

Conventional insulation is the most effective, but you could get creative. Old blankets, carpet scraps, shredded newspaper. Even just hanging sheetrock or plywood on the walls would help.

Well, I kinda splurged in that over the sheet rock I added 3 laths and attached 4x8 sheets of pegboard sideways on 3 walls for hanging tools and equipment.

The Great Blah-dee-te is correct - Japanese dogwood. They are called drupes and are (despite looking like miniature red submarine mines) edible. We have one in our front yard and I'd been watching the birds & squirrels eat those things for years and got a little curious....they are sweet with a kinda pulpy/slightly gritty texture, and not much else. Kinda bland, actually.Fun to eat them in front of other people and watch their horrified reactions. Wait until they're red - up here it'll still be a month before that happens, IIRC. If you can make it to the Northeast Gathering, I'll save some and bring them along. Wild edibles, you know.....

Well, looks like it's about time for a new hammock

You are kidding aren't you Spike? You've just added a built in toilet!

..Thanks man. Got enough room for a beer fridge, futon, and small poker table.... Thinking ahead lol..

That's my boy. You really ARE a Beckerhead! A Suthron Peanut Butter Beckerhead!!

..Fun to eat them in front of other people and watch their horrified reactions...

Please tell me you go into fake convulsions just to add to the drama!?

12 hour shift? Check. Driving 500kms straight after said shift? Check. Drinking half a bottle of Wild Turkey after arrival? Check. Staying up to strip my 17 and 2 at my sisters house 21 hrs after I woke up? Check. Cutting myself on the unprotected blade of my 17 then getting industrial strength paint stripper in the cut? Check. Being a complete and absolute effing idiot? 100% check..

I. Rock.
