A new special steel

I would love to try some out, I would be interested in 5/32"-3/16" x 2" x 18" or longer , I would like to test its ability to the max, I have a combat machete design that I have been wanting to make using a tough steel and was about to go with good ole 5160, but I can wait if this is gonna happen, sounds like this may be a winner. I would also be interested in it for a more conservative knife design... all depends on the size billets you offer up. I am also curious as to what this steel is truly geared toward, Any kind of significant corrosion resistance? Sounds like it would have to be in order to perform the tasks you have mentions i.e. - grinding frozen logs. It would be nice to come across a steel dare I say comparable to....(infi, yeah I said it, infi lol)

I also have a digitally controlled electric heat treating oven and would require the necessary information to perform the HT myself. I would also be more than willing to post an extensive review on it, as I am sure any of us would do......

You can sign me up as well as long as heat treatment information is available and the HT can be done with a standard heat treating oven. I'll make do with whatever sizes are available. If it's forgeable and you can provide forging specs I'd be willing to hot work some of it as well.

I would love to try a piece around a 3/8- 1/4" thick and somewhere between 14"-20" long and around 2"-2 1/2" wide, if I can get the heat treat specs.

Ryan, unless it is a trade secret, you should consider posting the steels specs. There are any number of guys here that could tell you a lot just from reading them.

If you have any used teeth, I'd be interested in them, as well - could be fun to use in building a war hammer or mace. :D
(and I'm more than willing to pay shipping and/or scrap prices for the steel)

I'm in just need pertinant info, heat treat, you know what everyone said... lol 1.25" x 36" would be cool.

Ha ha! Looks like I am getting here a couple hours too late! I realize I am too far down the list for any free steel, but I would certainly be interested in the chemistry and HT information as well as charpy test results if you have them. Posting the chemistry would help give potential users an idea of what kind of blades the steel can be used for.

New steel for a knifemaker is more exciting than Christmas!

Absolutely, we are interested. Recent events have left many dealers looking for new suppliers so this is an open door.

We would need HT specs, and a full spec sheet would be very useful. It would be difficult to design a blade appropriate to an alloy of unknown characteristics.

Sizes 3/32 to 1/4" thick - generally 1 1/4 to 2" wide and length would detemine how many we could test. I'm thinking a few thicknesses from 10 - 12" long would be more use than one longer bar.

We'd be glad to post our evaluation on the on-line store website.

Thanks for the offer

Rob!

I'd love to get in. I'd even be happy to pay for a sample, providing you have heat treat info.

You can sign me up and I would provide detailed feedback on it. I can experiment with the heat treat off the composition.

I would like to try it out on a santoku. 1/8"X2"X12" should be enough.
Thanks for offering this.

Ryan,

The suspense is killing us buddy:(:D

I would also consider buying some from you when we figure out just what this "Super-Beast" is....;-)
